An altercation is a situation involving two players, with at least one to be penalized.
It doesn't need to be a fight, just at least one of the two players are penalized.

At the end of the day, if anything, it shows the complete randomness of NHL officiating and how the rule book is more of a guide.

Still I curious if the league will suspend the ranger player for jumping him with under 5 min to go in the game or fine him or the coach. I doubt it but this is the NHL where talking about

I know, but that definition is so broad it could mean anything. Later they continually refer to a fight.

Darren Haynes once-again makes a The Athletic subscription worth the price of admission with a great breakdown of the epic shift by the fourth line that led to Hathaway's first and set the tone for Gaudreau's second 2 and a half minutes later: https://theathletic.com/605754/2018/...hanging-shift/

However, Skjei drops his gloves immediately, he should definitely get an instigator and a fighting major, and the automatic suspension that comes with the instigator. Again, fighting majors do not have to be given to both teams, the can just be given to one player (I.e the Bourque example above). One could argue that Skjei could get another penalty - holding or interference, because Andersson didn’t have the puck as was being grabbed.
I thought at the time that that was a potential call, but if you watch the overhead replay, Sjkei never throws a punch. There's no call for fighting there, so no aggressor penalty or game misconduct either. It probably should have been a double minor for roughing, and honestly, both Gio and Zuckarello should have gotten slashing minors. If those had been the calls, then the end result would still have been the same: Flames get a goal and a two minute powerplay.

Something I realized watching the highlights: Three of the Flames four goals were scored while there was a delayed penalty. All of the goals happened so soon after the infraction that they weren't in an extra-attacker scenario, but I don't think I've ever seen that happen that many times in one game.

I noticed that too. I hope it speaks to resiliency; for example, Hathaway (of all people!) didn’t care that Andersson was in a skirmish, he put his head down and scored. Fighting through infractions is not just useful in October, but also in the playoffs when most of those calls aren’t made.

I was curious about the lack of Oiler fan stuff in the ATL, so I went over to the bad site. Not one post about this game in their OOT thread. Maybe they've figured out they are being reposted and look stupid? Maybe they are embarrassed about calling Johnny a diver on a play where got yanked from the game the previous time? Maybe they've given up.

Getting an early start on Easter dinner. They're all very busy.
