Honestly, this is the first early season I've seen in a long time where I have some serious hope for a finely tuned team this year. We've played some of the best teams in the league and played great. Call me more than cautiously optimistic!

Not nearly enough love for Hathaway here. GWG and final nail. Goals in the league are pretty hard to come by for 4th liners, but they can pot them, and he brings it every shift and gets involved stirring the pot and sacrifcing the body to make things happen... very under rated, for those who are simply looking at who else should be playing in his slot each night, as he brings an element that no other roster player really does outside of Tkachuk, being paid the league minimum to do so.
The flyby on Anderson was good too.
|
The problem though - and this is true for most energy guys - is that they are only effective when they are playing with desperation. And when you dress every night, you can't play with desperation every night. It just isn't possible.
IMO, Hathaway is most useful for this team as a 13th guy that gets games here and there, and when there are injuries. And when they need a spark of physicality.

Flames tied for 5th in goals per game, a place behind the "juggernaut" Leafs offense.
It feels good to play somewhat of a stinker and still have the scoring ability to still put 4 behind the king.

Last night I mis-named Hathaway and called him Mangiapane...he then stormed back and scored two goals, looking much better in the process.
I might be on to something here..

I would love to see him get more starts. Maybe he is one of those goalies that is a perfect back-up and can close games and be an occasional starter, but can't maintain it. But maybe he is more. It would be good to find out.
|
Early in the game he allowed a huge rebound that skipped past a Ranger who would have had perhaps a wide open net. A minute later he started making great saves. It was like he said "OK, that wasn't good - time to get tough".

Looks to me like he is trailing Linus Ullmark in both categories.

I have to say, it’s very refreshing to have a coach that can coach.
GG putting a rookie on the first line or with another rookie? Not a chance. 0.
Demoting players with tough games? Who would of thought.

-really cheering for Rittich. Thought he was excellent last year until Smith went down, and was worried when his pre season was going poorly. But he has shown far more than Gillies has, and his whole game just has so much potential. Really calm, positionally very solid, but also has shown some nice athleticism when needed. I feel like there is some real potential to become a number one, but it is always a question with goalies if they fulfill it.
-I’m loving some of the systemic changes Peters has made. I was worried he may just be a better version of Gully, but his philosophies are definitely different. The D are much more active at all times, and they are expected to be pinching down hard in the O zone at all times. Along with that, the forwards are expected to be covering the D, and so are looking for it and aware of it. Under Gully he generally had the D taking all the responsibility, so if they pinched and got burned, it was all on them, as opposed to being on the forwards who didn’t cover.
The result is a better and more effective forecheck, more O zone time, more shots, possession, and even goals. Advanced stats fans or not, we can all agree on that.
I also liked that they typically keep playing that way, even ahead in the third. They don’t just go ultra conservative and try to play ‘50/50’ hockey.

Yeah, that did not go well the last time it was tried.
