Well Chia traded two franchise players and got back Larsson, Eriksson, Peverly, and Ryan Button (who?). Looks like the Bruins also gave up Reilly Smith in the Seguin deal. So debatably they gave up the three best players in both deals. So what do you expect Chia would get back in a prospective McDavid deal?
8 more years is a long time. A lot can happen between now and then. The cap will keep rising. There is a possibility they replace Chiarelli with a GM who isnt a complete moron. I hope he gets sick of the circus and demands a trade but he is a special enough player that you never know what he's capable of doing.
Every single one of the all time greats have a Stanley Cup to their name. Look at this kid play and tell me he's not a top ten talent of all time. That should worry you as a Flames fan even if the Oilers have somehow managed to screw it up thus far.
Even if the cap keeps rising, they can't "free agent" their way to a contending team.
They need to draft and development WAAAY better than they have been. Even if Chiarelli is toasted, they won't go scorched earth and implement the organizational enema they require.
Several scouts will remain, as they did before, including the ones with navel-gazing beer goggles who selected local Edmonton kid, #1 Bantam WHL bantam draft pick Tyler Benson in the 2nd round of 2016 when better options like ex-McDavid teammate Alex Debrincat were available. They need cheap replacement level NHL talent.
Their results have proven they suck at this, and that's only drafting. The post-Oiler bump shows how much they suck at development as well.
Chiarelli is most likely done this year without the playoffs, or even with a first round exit... and all of our fears will be addressed or legitimized if they fully flush the organization of nepotism, cronyism, and groupthink or just double down on the Sather trained, I'm smarter than you, old boys club.

If its and buts were Canady and nuts blah blah blah.
The Oilers haven't got a good track record of hiring coaches and managers under the current brain trust, so unless Lowe, Mac-T, Mess, Gretzky and all of the other former Oilers are fired that's not going to change.
On top of that, because the Oilers are so incompetantly run nobody good is going to want to come to the mob that can't shoot straight.
On top of that, the cap rises for everyone and most teams will benefit more from a cap increase then the Oilers because they aren't as hamstrung with terrible contracts and bad players.
Lets keep going shall we?
The only guy that seem to sign with Edmonton are players that nobody else can be bothered with.
Why . . . because most players don't want to toss their careers away playing for a badly run, outfight who are all wearing a team uniform of I'm with stupid and the arrow points up T-Shirts.
Well maybe the Oilers can trade their way out of the situation? Nah, there aren't a lot of assets in that organization that teams are clamoring for unless they need guys to clean the toilets between periods or stock the pop corn poppers. Frankly the only guys with value are McDavid, RNH with salary retention, Draisaitl though again he's not really a good contract value. Bouchard if the NHL allows double runner skates, and well that's about it. So unless the Oilers are willing to do the following.
Fire all the members of Katz sunday night twister party.
Trade their only good assets for cap space and draft picks.
Come to the realization that its likely that by the time McDavid reaches the end of his deal that the Oilers will probably be rebuilding.
The only other option is demolition charges planted throughout the new building and a hefty insurance claim.
Oilers suck, their one playoff year was a statistical fluke.

Let's say for example the Red Wings get the 1st overall pick next year. Maybe they offer up that plus Bertuzzi, Cholowski and another decent roster player and another 2nd round pick or something like that. Maybe that would do it if McDavid wanted out of Edmonton. But I dunno, maybe I'm way off.

IDK..this IS a franchise that traded a #1 overall, straight up, for Adam Larsson? Oh, I can't even remember if they got ANYTHING, for #1 overall, Nail Yak-me-off.

2016-Oct-07 Traded from Edmonton Oilers to St. Louis Blues for Zach Pochiro and conditional round 3 pick in the 2017 draft (Cameron Crotty)
No good!
Though the mistake wasn't trading Yakupov for what they got - the mistake was drafting him in the first place.

So what you're saying is that IF they ever traded mcdinglenuts Chia is the one to structure the return on it?
That city would turn itself inside out. One could only hope that Edmonton becomes the franchise that traded away both Gretzky and McBranchDavidian.
This might be the best one yet because McDavid is embedded in the name. It also alludes to the cult-leader-like status of McDavid in the Edmonton area. Praise be his name!

I saw Ryan Nugent-Hopkins at a grocery store in Edmonton yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a *****e and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly
McDavid dresses as Homer Simpson at the Oilers Halloween party.
I can't believe he dressed in full yellow-face. I hope the league takes a serious look at this and considers a lifetime suspension and banishes him to Shelbyville to live out his days coaching the Shelbyville Visitors to a single post-season appearance.

I don't think we need to get too deep into what McDavid is wearing to Halloween parties as it seems a little overboard critiquing his costume. It's not his fault he got drafted by the worst organization in professional sports so let him have at least a little fun when possible.
