It is nice hearing all of the commentaries about Connor McDavid without addressing the elephant on the couch.
The Oilers are an abysmally constructed franchise.
They all know this, but they never mention it because...
1. Thin skinned Oiler fans lose what remaining brain cells they have.
2. They fear access to the Golden Child, by talking TOO negatively about a franchise that can't construct a contending franchise with over a decade of top 10 picks.
Think about this Thread and how long deep and dark anyone in hockey media could go on the Oilers?
However the continuous realistic analysis of their situation would be construed as "Negative"..
("Why do you guys gotta be so negative?" )
This would, and has, ticked off Oiler management... so... the hockey media just dances around the discussion of their ineptitude... and focuses on...
WOW-WEEE... Connor's magic.

Good discussion on Elliott's 31 thoughts podcast this week about how McShoulderTap's average 5on5 ice time is second in history to only Pavel Bure.

The Oilers are a complete joke but it chaps my ass and keep me awake at night thinking they have another 7 years to stop screwing the pooch and build something around McDavid.
They aren't winning #### this year but 7 years after this with a guy as talented as McDavid... competent management could make build a contender around him. That's a scary thought.

My guess is if they miss this year and next, rumours will start circulating about him wanting out

Even if they make the playoffs there will be rumours of him wanting out.

I think this year, he won't waste away his career. If it does happen oilers begin rebuild 4.0 with a pile of picks and players they will get for him

Missing out this year would have quite the effect IMO and the rumors would start. Then they start the process of consulting with him on a new coach. Best thing possible is for him to lap the field in the scoring race and miss the playoffs badly.

The Oilers had 3 years to build a contender when McDavid was on his entry level contract and failed. What makes you think they can build a contender now that he takes up $12.5M in cap space?
The best the Oilers an hope for is McDavid dragging them into the playoffs a couple times before he inevitably leaves as an UFA.

8 more years is a long time. A lot can happen between now and then. The cap will keep rising. There is a possibility they replace Chiarelli with a GM who isnt a complete moron. I hope he gets sick of the circus and demands a trade but he is a special enough player that you never know what he's capable of doing.
Every single one of the all time greats have a Stanley Cup to their name. Look at this kid play and tell me he's not a top ten talent of all time. That should worry you as a Flames fan even if the Oilers have somehow managed to screw it up thus far.

Gretzky never won a cup with the Kings. It takes more than a generational talent to win. Every single elite all time talent played with another top 50 all time player when they win a cup.

Good point. But Gretzky did get the Kings close enough to make Habs fans buttcheeks clench. He also had a great run that one season with the Blues until Stevie Y ripped that slapper top shelf on Jon Casey. All I'm saying is 8 years is a long time to figure it out. I pray he wants out sooner than later.
