This phrase (or idiom) comes from the sport of kings: horse racing. A bit is part of the apparatus that goes in the horse’s mouth and connects to the bridle and reins so the horse can be controlled and directed by the jockey on its back. The bit fits into a toothless ridge of the horse’s mouth, so the horse never really bites the bit. But it can grind his teeth or jaw against the bit, and if it does, it means that the horse is either nervous, or really excited about racing.
One definition of champ is to bite or chew noisily. These are the senses meant in the idiom champing at the bit, which refers to the tendency of some horses to chew on the bit when impatient or eager. In its figurative sense, it means to show impatience while delayed, or just to be eager to start.
That’s how the phrase “champing at the bit” entered everyday communications: to indicate extreme eagerness.

Is this not also the definition of chomp?

In fact, chomp, which began as a variant of champ, is alive in English while the biting-related sense of champ is dead outside this idiom, so it’s no wonder that chomping at the bit is about 20 times as common as champing at the bit on the web.

I've learned so much in this GDT and it's lead me down a weird rabbit hole of Champions, champagne and of course, The Champ.
Can't watch so hopefully I can stand Wills for a couple hours

He's stuck on line 4 though. Not sure it translates to many minutes.

Is being stuck on a line something we need to be worried about anymore though? If he's moving out there, coach'll play him

Dube will probably find himself centering Bennett & Neal before the game is through.

Champing at the bit can sound funny to people who aren’t familiar with the idiom or the obsolete sense of champ, while most English speakers can infer the meaning of chomping at the bit.
Still, if you’re writing for school or for readers who are versed in English, champing at the bit is probably the safer choice.
|
I guess we are presuming that the readers of CalgaryPuck are "well versed in English?" That seems... generous.

Makes me tear up a bit to see someone using the original format for this idiom. People think I'm daft when I say "champing" instead of (in my opinion, incorrectly) "chomping".
Edit: I only read the quoted comment before posting mine. I see we're on page 4 of discussing it. I'm not the only one it appears!

I'm waiting with baited breath for this one. It's really peaked my interest. For all intensive purposes, if the Flames play the same as they have they win. All they have to do is reign in there emotions, tow the line that Peters is setting. If they hone in on the proper goals, they will do well.
Who's starting for Nashville - never mind I could care less. But then, I'm bias.
Irregardless, it should be fun.
