What I would like to see tonight: a goal from each line (let's say Lindholm, Czarnik, Neal and Frolik. Flames win 4-2.

Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
Coach Bill Peters confirms Mike Smith will start in goal tonight. Dillon Dube will be a game-time decision. Mark Jankowski will warm up and be ready if Dube can’t go. #CGYvsSTL

I never liked the let the goalie play after the shutout thought a lot of people have. Pinder tweeted the following:

@SNRyanPinder

Re: 'Mike Smith needs to start after a shutout' narrative

Smith recored three shutouts last season and played the next game after each. His numbers were downright brutal.

5.49 GAA, .847 S% and was pulled in two of the three games.

^ This is also part of the problem with the goalie coach. He has this info. If Smith pleads for the net thats one thing, but part of his job is to run the numbers and inform Peters of such items.

So if Smith gets lit up tonight, thats a fail on Sigalet's part.

It would be nice to see the Flames rotate centers through the second line with Tkachuk & Neal until they find a combo that results in having a 2nd line scoring threat.

Backlund could be the 3rd line checking center.

Haha busted! I was a closet Flames Fan all those years. Always tried to lose a trade with them.

Eric Francis @EricFrancis
Matthew Tkachuk watched his sister score twice in her varsity field hockey game last night, followed by two goals from brother Brady. “There’s a lot of pressure on me tonight,” laughed Matthew, who has 50 tickets for tonight’s hometown game here in St. Louis. #flames

Pretty short-sighted to hang that on Sigalet. You don’t think there were other variables that played into three poor performances following a shutout? Say, the team’s play in front of him? Or poor head coaching which we just love to point out?

Three games into the season. Let the guy roll for one more night. And then let Rittich handle Colorado.

There really is no 2nd/3rd line.
A first line, a checking line, a second scoring line, a 4th line.
I think ideally there would not be a huge difference in even strength ice time, within reason.

This year?

Tkachuk off to a good start on the PP, but Backlund has zero points. Has to change. They're dominating but not scoring.
I would have gone with any of the following:
  • Power play operating at 16%, with only STL and EDM worse
  • Power play also giving up 7 short handed goals, tied for 11th worst
  • Team not prepared to play when the opening puck dropped
  • Undisciplined team having 11.12 penalty minutes per game, 2nd worst in the league
  • Below 50% face off win percentage
Any of those were far bigger reasons why they missed the playoffs last year, with the power play being easily the biggest. In 2016-17 3M had 52 goals in 239 games. Last year they had 48 goals in 220 games. Their goals per game was actually higher last year compared to 2016-17.

Troy Brouwer was on the ice for almost 94 minutes of power play time. That's over 1.5 full games worth. He scored zero goals. He was the 8th most used forward on the power play, which included Versteeg who is mostly used as a defenceman on the PP. That is a far bigger reason why the Flames missed the playoffs than the team's number one checking line scoring 4 less goals than they did in the previous year.

Very fair points and yes, pretty short sighted on my part.

Yeah, this has the makings of a rough night. I posted yesterday that Smith has recorded only two wins in his last fourteen games against then Blues, with neither in occurring in St. Louis.

Or he's maintaining his relationship with the goalie (probably the goalie coach's most important job) and not looking at a super small sample size of 3 games without any other context.

Coaches - "Rittich is getting one of the next two games, what one do you want?"

Smith - "I feel good. It's early in the season and we have lots of time off, so I want to go again tonight"

Coaches - "Says here you were terrible last season the game after a shutout, we're going to go with Rittich against the Blues tonight"

Yeah that is really going to go over well with an ultra competitive guy like Smith.

I think Neal will get on Backlund's line eventually, but it is really tough to change things up right now. The best thing about that line is how they are constantly buzzing the offensive zone and wreaking havoc with speed. I would worry a little about that now with both Tkachuk and Neal on a line together.

I don't the decision to start Smith. He gives you your best chance to win. That can be the case any night but a victory tonight and you are 3-1 to start the year, which is a strong start for once. Lose and your are back to 2-2 and now under pressure to avoid a 2-3 start.
I'm of the mind that getting off to a strong start takes the pressure of this team through the balance of the year. There are always going to be dips, but when you start the year with one, it basically means you're going to be grippin' it from there on out.

I'm worried we're heading down the same path as last year. Smith plays well early so we keep riding him while he's hot (which some posters already pointed out his brutal post-SO stats)...and before you know it, he's on pace to play 70 games at the end of November.

Smith is one of the oldest starting goalies in the league and he's very injury prone and IMO, we should be planning to start him 55-60 games max. It's important to get Rittich/Gillies in every 3rd or 4th game early in the season, while the games have less pressure. As the season progresses, the temptation to stick with Smith will only increase as the playoff battles pick up.
