I'm kinda old school in the sense that I think Dmen should wear lower numbers, and goalies should wear number 1, and then something in the 20s or 30s.
I also like the "flashy" high numbers, but only for great players.

Unfortunately, it's not a penalty, but you can hold that in your back pocket to get in the goalie's head like Darryl did a few years back with Scrivens.
https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...ge-stick-tape/
Note, it didn't work and the Oilers won that shootout anyway.

Saprykin - the best 19 they've had until now which says a lot.

Hunter's revenge over Robinson from the 1986 final. The 2004 SC Finals had #19 Oleg Saprykin vs #19 Brad Richards.

Sometimes I wish clubs make only the numbers 1 to 29 available to players, and further still, #1 is automatically assigned to the goalie, 1-6 to the dmen and the forwards get the rest.

I'm on the high end of numbers. Make all teams start from #60 to #98 and permit 0 and 00 to be used. Allow star defensive players to wear low numbers.
Neil Sheehy wore 0 and goaltender John Davidson wore 00.

I find numbers fascinating, and really do hope that a locker-room code keeps up. It seems to be getting more and more lax lately though - so hopefully there's a desire to keep tradition and we see some numbers disappear.
I think it's great to have players loosely identify with their group, and I appreciate the 'he's a defenceman' subconscious understanding I have when seeing a jersey. There's definitely a benefit to generally identifying players based on their number.
Seeing a non-traditional number used to also mean that this guy is a great player, but it's now more likely to be a retained rookie number or a high number they've worn since junior. I didn't love hearing it from the organization, but I do wish there was an unspoken rule that you'd have to have a pretty big pair on ya to think you're wearing #98 out there.
The captain might take you aside and say "listen bud, I know you think the number looks really great (it does)... but your 1 goal last year isn't speaking 'special player' out there. Let's try on a not-so flashy 20-29 eh?". If that kind of scenario ever came up...
I also completely agree in evaluating a team on their #19. It's such a prevalent number for solid players throughout the league.
Edit: Aldso, "Jaromir Jagr chose 68 due to the events in 1968 Czechoslovakia which led to the democratization of that country" is fascinating.

Goalies: 1-3, and 30-39.
Defencemen: 2-8.
9 is reserved for first-line centers.
If you wear a number higher than 40, you better be something special, or have a darn good story behind it.
If you wear a double number higher than 40 (ie 66 or 88), you better be Art Ross material.
Exactly one person is allowed to wear 99. And it’s not you.

Haven't most of the great players to wear #9 been wingers?

This is an argument for Forever a Flame, FWIW. You have 3 retired, 5 will be, plus you have a couple other d-men would had higher numbers that could be retired (and this would have impacted 2-8 under your plan).
I can't think of a great centre with number 9. Richard, Howe, Hull, Lanny, Modano, Kariya were all wingers.

Coming from a background back home with Rugby (and to a lesser extent, Soccer) where your number reflects your position, it is jarring to me to see no rhyme or reason to numbers that players wear.
But unless you either lock a number to a position, or a group of numbers to a position (like in NFL for linemen) then why not have a free for all?

For some reason, I’ve always thought of 7 as a forward number. Could make a case either way. (Coffey, Joey Mullen.)

Zoom in on the pic, there is.
Of course the story of Sheehy wearing 0 in Hartford always comes up when talking about numbers. Broke antiquated NHL stats computers long before Y2K was thought of, so he switched.
No skater has the balls to wear #1.
Recall the uproar when it looked like Brodie was going to make the big club and had 66 as his training camp number...

This explanation is very misleading. Close but not quite there. The Prague spring of 1968 is mostly known for the violent Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia as a response to the anti-Soviet movement. Jagrs grandfather was among the dead Czechs, and Jagr wears it in remembrance/honour of his grandfather.
So it's both more personal and more of a political FU than a celebration of democratization. (Which did not happen in 1968, because of the Soviet clampdown.)

I feel very much the second way about numbers. I kinda wish numbers were attached to your position. #1, 30, 31 to the goalies. 2-7 to defense (or to 8 if a team dresses 7 D) 8 or 9 to 20 or 21 for forwards.
Even better if lower numbers were for players on first lines/first pairings.
Dressing for your first nhl game as a fourth liner? Congrats kid, here’s number 20. Been playing well enough to make it to the second line? Here’s number 12.
Admittedly it would be hell on equipment managers.

It would be hell on fans too. Youd never have an up to date Jersey of a player, or watching the game and trying to recognize players by there numbers

0 and 00 can't be used anymore because they cause the NHL's stats system to crash.
Sheehy wore 0 because his family name was once O'Sheehy. What a guy.
