It would look less like a bib if it had the rounded shoulder caps like they had on the yellow jerseys in the 80s.
Stripes on the bottom would help too.

You're exactly right. They are paying homage, but re-interpreted that design in a really odd way. IMO, drop the silly numbers and this design was a perfect example of what a 3rd jersey should be:
It's as if the designer heard everyone griping over the jersey re-releases that were going on all summer and thought they'd mix things up a bit more.

Is that the actual jersey? The picture of Letang wearing in it the previous page has a different collar, what looks to be different styled numbers on the shoulders, different styled captains "A" (although the C could be different I suppose), and no patches on the sleeves.

That appears to be an outdoor game jersey from 2016/2017.
Looked great. Definitely an upgrade on this new third.

Yeah, the one Letang is wearing was inspired by these outdoor jerseys... which were inspired by the 80s golds.

My issue with the Flyers (and Jets, and NYI) jersey was just perfectly paraphrased:
"...it almost looks like a fan's rendition of what they want Flyers jersey to look like"
I think that's exactly it. They look sharp, and I really like them on the ice...
...but they really do look like a quick sketch of 'Flyers in black'. We got black, add some orange stripes, the logo... done.

I'll be honest I was never really a fan of those Jersey's. They just remind me too much of New Jersey over a broadcast. I don't think they are bad but the Flames can do much better.

I got accustomed to them and stopped seeing NJ until this week when I saw a Johnny highlight in those again. They're really really NJ
