Brian Elliott on smaller equipment: ‘I’m getting bruised like crazy’
Quote:
But the longer this continues, the more we’ll likely hear about the size of goalie equipment. Last season the NHL started streamlining the size of pants in February and the clamp down on oversized equipment is continuing this season, with chest protectors now in the crosshairs.
The measurements have shrunk, but basically the NHL wants goalies to wear equipment that is tight to the body and not exaggerated to take up more room in the net.
“The chest and arm protector worn by each goalkeeper must be anatomically proportional and size-specific based on the individual physical characteristics of that goalkeeper,” reads Rule 11.3.
Flyers goalie Brian Elliott spoke about the effect the new equipment has had on his body so far.

Might be why Smith has been quite leaky as well.

I wish Elliot got more bruised in the Ducks series.

wouldn't Elliott actually have to, you know, stop the puck in order to get bruised?

Not literally bruised but a bruised ego...

Pics of bruises, or GTFO.
Otherwise, I file this under whiney goalies.

Boo hoo. It's your job to put your body in front of pucks. You should be getting bruised.

Can only imagine how beat up an actual good goalie is right now if Brian Elliott is complaining about being bruised...

Really? I always thought Elliott had confused being a hockey goalie with 'Dodgeball!'

Does anyone have a side my side comparison of goalies with the new equipment and the old equipment?

Looks like Jerseys are tighter to the body. not as wide over all I think.
Bad pictures to really compare but Luongo was always one of the bad guys for oversized everything.

You can get a look at the new stuff here:
https://ingoalmag.com/gear/exclusive...est-protector/
I play a lot of goal and I don't really see a huge difference.... much of it is pretty subtle. But I can see Elliott's point about it being form fitting and having the equipment right up against you. Taking a 80+ MPH shot in games/practices mutliplied by tens of thousands will eventually lead to injury.

If that's the case, the changes may be taking things a bit too far. A change in equipment should never lead to an increase in injuries. They may need to find some middle ground that still provides the best possible protection.

Yeah, I guess it depends on how you look at it. You'll have the 'boo hoo' types who expect a Terry Sawchuk level of pain tolerance despite having never having to try taking a heavy shot regularly... you'll have others (other goalies, usually) who want to be covered like Robocop and will have a hissy fit on any proposed change.
Like you said, I think it's going to take experimentation and let the pendulum swing a few times. I still think reducing the size of their pants further would likely give the biggest increase in goals scored without injury.

As I have been since it was first mentioned.... I don’t see a lack of goal scoring at all. I’m okay with Ovechkin not scoring 85goals a year. That level of scoring is dumb, 4-3 games are great.

Almost certainly. Same for every other goalie. Watch Gio's goal from Saturday. Sure looks like it hit Markstrom right in the middle of his chest rolled towards his shoulder and disappeared between his body and arm.

I thought Gio's goal the other night kind of went though Markstrom and that could have been due to less padding between his body and arm.
