Gardiner is gone. NO $ for him. Dermott is his cheap replacement.

Jagr tried a year ago.
Bennett has until the new year to show signs of rebirth at some consistent level. If not, the trade options for teams willing to give him the cliched but true, change of scenery, may be too tough for BT to resist.

What on earth are you talking about? Palat is a perennial 40-60pt player, has 10 more pts than Bennett last year in ~30 less games. Hoffman, it’s not even close, he doubled Bennett’s production last season.
Edit: may have misread, as you said a few are debatable... some definitely are not.

Matthews will sign for $11 mil, Marner will be 7-9 range... definitely won’t have any cap room. An excellent group of fwds tho, so could make up for the AHL defence.

Always hope it just "clicks" for Bennett. Similar to Sean Couturier. High 1st round pick who was a 35ish point player for 6 seasons and then broke out. Patience paid off.

Even if he could become a gritty 50pt center pushing Backlund down. That would do wonders for the team.

Even as a winger would be great. I believe that he will get better and be a physical 45-50 point player. Eventually giving us 2nd line of:
Tkachuk-Lindholm-Bennett

Tkachuk has said he can play either wing. Has Bennett ever played RW?

Part of me still very much wants to see a Tkachuk - Bennett - Neal line to terrorize the opposition.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Bennett - Neal
Dube - Backlund - Czarnik
Jankowski - Ryan - Frolik
Lots of options with the bottom six too; could run with a veteran 3A line and young 3B line:
Frolik - Backlund - Ryan
Dube - Jankowski - Czarnik
With Bennett time is of the essence now and I do think giving him minutes and situations to play with higher end talent should give us a definitive with regards to what we have with Bennett as a player.
I do very much like the idea of going after a player like Panarin or Stone near the deadline if we are positioned well in the pacific/west and it’s almost a sure bet that Bennett would be part of the package required to acquire a Stone or Panarin so giving Bennett a little more opportunity to increase his value could make some sense as well.

I kind of feel sorry for Bennett. He's had plenty of time and opportunity to show what he can do, and he's failed. He's progressed in the wrong direction and he has forced Treliving's hand. The GM went out and brought in a number of players that immediately push Bennett down the lineup. Worse, a new coach has come in and views Bennett as just another player who has to earn his time. Piling up against Bennett is the existence of a coach's favorite player (Ryan), and a new player they need to make an immediate decision on (Czarnik) and Bennett is buried. His opportunities to show more took a real kick in the nuts in the off season. The final kicked was young Mr. Dube coming in and forcing his way into the lineup, pushing Bennett onto the 4th line. It's all up hill from here for Sam.
Bennett needs to focus on getting his head right and seizing the opportunities when they arise. Bennett needs to recognize he is bottom of the totem pole right now and needs to ficus on supplanting the player above him. Start by chasing down Dube and showing you are a better option than the rookie. Then focus on pushing Frolik out of the mix on the lines above. Bennett isn't going to get a chance if he doesn't show he is capable of out performing these guys and out working them. The onus is on Bennett to go out there, work his ass off, and be opportunistic and score some goals. If he doesn't do this, the team will be forced to move on.

The AHL defence that gave up the 3rd lowest GA in the East, and the lowest after Jan 1a=st.
Morgan Rielly is a legit #1 and getting better.
I think you are even short-changing Matthews and Marner. Matthew gets 12 million, Marner 9-10. Marner is going to go crazy this year.

Rielly is good, their D is pretty awful after that... on paper anyways. Matthews will get 11, he won’t get more than Tavares, IMO. You might be right about Marner... they will be in “cap hell” but so are the penguins... good teams should be. They won’t be able to keep Nylander.

Does Brodie + to Leafs, for Nylander to Flames make any sense?

So is the plan to re-sign Brodie long term as a UFA in two years time?

You can have the presidents trophy every year if you like.
When the real games start Toronto faceplants in the first round.

As Flames fans, we really shouldn’t mock other franchises for playoff failures...
4 series wins in nearly 30 years is an impressive level of ineptitude.

We’re fans. We can and should mock whoever the hell we want. Calgary’s successes or failures are completely irrelevant when berating Toronto.

Couturier was a 35 point guy because he was playing the d-role on the third line and shutting down the other teams best players. A role he excelled in.
He broke out scoring because eh he was moved to a scoring line and got big PP time.
Philly knew he could increase his scoring but needed him else where.
It just didn't click with Couturier, it was simply a matter of usage.

All mostly accurate, but Couturier played a ton with the likes of Voracek, Schenn, and Simmonds.
Last year he was centering Claude Giroux, and he had his breakout season.
