Exactly.
This is how it should be. The league should be able to enforce its rules effectively. Thus eliminating the so-called "need" for fightin

And until that happens, fighting will be a part of the game.

It may be limited moving forward but should always be part of the game. In my opinion.

I agree.

Fighting on its own is not an issue..

Having 6'5" 240lbs monsters on skates that only fight is what is no longer needed in the game.

I love seeing Bennett go out there play hard, hit a couple guys and piss them off to the point where they want to fight. If regulated properly it can be an important aspect of the game.

We don't need players that just sit on the bench wondering when they will be sent out just to fight but all players should be allowed to fight if they want.

The key for me is making sure players fight within their same weight class.. Lomberg probably shouldn't have been allowed to fight that ogre he fought last year and truthfully Hamonic probably shouldn't have fought last night.

It becomes an unsafe act when you have a massive reach disadvantage. If a guy is holding onto your collar and is feeding you knuckle sandwiches and he has a few inches reach on you there isn't a whole lot you can do about it.

The refs should breakup fights when it is a clear mismatch, not abolish fighting all together!

As a sidenote on the topic of fighting, I will always be mad the refs wouldn't let Gio and Iggy fight a few years back.

I was at the game and the crowd was so excited about the idea of it and I think it would have been a good scrap. They are both roughly the same size and are classy players who would have fought with respect..

I still don't really know why they broke it up before it had a chance to start?

We will always have Iggy vs Engelland

I was choked as well when the refs didn’t allow them to go. It would have been so cool to see the new captain vs the old captain. Unfortunately for Gio, I think he would have got tuned. Old man Iggy can still scrap, and Gio is a tough customer but I don’t recall ever seeing him win a fight, let alone look like a guy who knows what he’s doing in a fight

Yeah, it would not have ended well for Gio most likely.

Probably for the best

I agree.

Iggy was a top tier fighter. Holding your own against Engelland is not something easy and he did quite well. Gio is rough but he isnt a good scraper.

You are pointing to the absence of evidence as evidence itself. That's not how it works. It's actually a logical fallacy to do so. You can't prove the absence of something.

That's the first problem, but have you watched Gudbranson play much? I have, for years in Florida. He's the type of player that dishes out a big hit every now and then, but doesn't go looking for guys to punish. For a big guy, he plays a pretty clean game, and I can't recall any other dirty hits in his past in my memory of him playing. He's also not much of a fighter or a goon. Also, he's not much more than a below average 2nd pairing d-man, so chances are he was going to be invisible the rest of the night anyway.

The fight did not noticeably change his behavior any more than the multiple penalties he took did. In fact, I would wager that a penalty changes player behavior more than anything else because you are hurting your teammates with every penalty you take, and guys can feel that in the dressing room if they're constantly putting their team on the PK. Gudbranson knows that makes more of a difference in the game than a big hit does.

As others have pointed out, a halfway decent power play would have punished them more than anything. If the Flames don't want to get pushed around this season, they need to have a power play in the top half of the league. That's the consequence for dirty/illegal plays: a friggin' powerplay goal.

I'd be curious to see the studies you've done to verify this claim.

Tre just interviewed on 960 and sounds like he may be done for a while. Said they will have final word today but was also talking about Anderson call up from Stockton for him as well.

Funny how easy it is to hate the Oilers fans. Reading comments on how "every team is licking their chops to play Calgary cause Calgary can be pushed around, and then disappear". Saying how long of a season it will be for Calgary as we have no team toughness. "Harmonic can't fight everyone, now what..." All the usual crap spewing out of their traps. Hammer the Nucks on the score sheet. That's how I want them to make a statement.

That's horrible news if Harmonic is out with a fractured jaw. If this team does not make a statement on Saturday against the Canucks and somehow end up losing the game I will lose all faith with this organization.

Wow, doesn’t take much to push you over that line, huh.

I'm not a fan of fighting anymore. I hate seeing someone take a hard punch.

But this conversation is tilted too far. We know why some of the players still want fighting...there is an intimidation factor out there. This game is perfect example. No pushback from the group when Vancouver asserted themselves with hits and post whistle shoves means someone felt they had to stand up.

Unless you play down there, i find it hard to judge and say "Dumb. Effin Dumb"

also funny how someone has to read oiler boards so they can immediately come running back here to squeal about it. not everything has to be about the oilers. especially in a thread that has nothing to do with them.

If anything, the huge (although illegal) hit and then beating down the toughest guy on the Flames roster would be a huge shot of confidence for Gudbrandson. He certainly wouldn't be walking on egg shells the rest of the game in fear of any sort of on ice accountability.
