The Canucks had three blue chip chances in all alone in the first and he stopped them all.
Early in the second he stopped another three that could have ended the game.
I see terrible defensive work and a goalie left abandoned.
I didn't like the Virtanen goal (as I said in the game story) but I also find it hard to blame a goalie on a breakaway.
Seems like he's a whipping boy. That game wasn't his fault at all.
Markstrom didn't have the degree of difficulty as Smith either because the Flames were on the perimeter or if they got in close they flubbed it (Dube breakaway, Backlund off his stick when he was in alone). Markstrom had a lot of pucks hit him that he never saw and many a rebound that he couldn't find.
I don't think anyone is putting all the blame at his feet. Not sure why you are getting that vibe. Everyone that watched the game knows that the entire team did not play well. We know the team will be better but it's still an ongoing concern if the goaltending will be better.
Didn’t want to post anything last night, it sucks to see them come out flat vs the Cunucks but it is just one game. Something I’ve noticed others aren’t talking about is the teams overpassing in the first 2 periods. Way too many times a shot was clearly the best option and the Flames decided to make an extra pass resulting in the Canucks stuffing it out. I think Backlind did this a couple times, once were he was one on one with Markstrom.
I liked Dube’s game a lot, I would not be opposed moving him up the lineup.
I can’t say I’m really shocked about the result. Nothing was worse than McDavid getting a hat trick on opening night so that’s a plus I guess. This team has been pretty awful vs pacific rivals the last couple seasons, I really would like to see them show up much more often vs our rivals. It’s inexcusable at this point.
I didn't watch the whole game but the one thing I noticed again much like last year is this team cant hit the net. lets the goalie off the hook so many times

There are plenty of "if our goalie could make a save" comments in the previous 18 pages
It's only one game but still a disappointing way to start. Excitement is high after a long summer with a lot of positive changes from coaching to forwards to defense. We get a gift facing a team projected to be a lottery team in a building that wasn't sold out.
As any season opener the last 10 years the Flames weren't ready, made preseason type mistakes and didn't really seem to engaged.
Hopefully they're more ready for game 2. Go Flames!
Why does the team wait so long to shoot the puck are they incapable of a one-timer?
to my eyes this was a side effect of everyone playing so sloppy and bumbling the puck. the vast majority of passes flames players received last night were on their back shoulder, and they had to coral the puck and then turn to face the net or pass or whatever

just a really messy endeavor all around

Yup, he/she has the authority to evaluate this correctly.

PP lost us this game. All other terrible play aside, going 0-7 sealed our fate and will continue to do so like last year until we get rid of the bull#### drop pass.
Also, get Noah on the PP please.. his zone entries were highlighted as part of the reason he was a good pickup. Lets utilize that and get Brodie backpass off the line.

When are people going to stop bitching about the drop pass on the power play. Every. Team. Uses. It.
The whole point is you get a guy at full speed vs 4 near stationary players. There is a reason why everyone uses it.
The issues with the PP are when they get in the zone.
This. The guy (Johnny) coming up can also see where the defenders are and pass or skate it across accordingly. It's sort of like when receivers in football rush the line before the snap and then back off, to see the defensive coverage.
They gain the zone with it almost every time. It's what happens next that is the issue. it's still too stationary (Lindholm held the puck way too long).
I don't like some of their assignments - Johnny was not in a position to make a quick pass and Brodie shouldn't be on the point. Neal should be on the first unit somehow, as a shooting threat. I guess I'd put Lindholm and Johnny on different units - they perform too similar of a role.
One of my biggest hopes coming in with a new coaching staff was to not see Brodie as a PP QB. He was terrible at it last year and his showing last night didn't look any better. Put Hanifin on PP2 instead.
Yeah, I just don't understand this.
He doesn't have a bomb of a shot, and he's not particularly good at getting shots through.
I assume he's back there because they're playing a 1-3-1, and need him to retrieve pucks or stop odd-man rushes, but last year Hamilton could have (and did later) fulfilled that role. This year, it seems as though Hanafin might be able to fulfill that role (his shot and ability to get it through is an unknown to me, but he can't be worse than Brodie in that respect, right?)

Bennett Janko and Dube didn't see the ice enough for a proper assessment, can't put any blame game on 9 minutes of ice time.

Dube and Valimaki were great, you notice both when they're out there almost immediately. Valimaki made some great passes, especially the one to spring Dube on the breakaway, and he almost had a beautiful one timer goal in the third there by the faceoff circle. Really excited about those two.
Dube made the most of his time. I'd say Bennett and Jankowski didn't, and you seem to agree.
One thing I did like last night was the lack of bottom falling out bottom six coming over the boards over and over again with the team trailing and needing a goal. Every line has something interesting with the chance of scoring. Great change when down.
