Backs-Fro
Benny-Janko
Ryan-Czarnik
Ryan isn't one of our likely PKers, while Lindholm is. The guys on roster who will see time PKing would probably be:

Backs-Lindholm
Frolik-Czarnik
Jankowski-Bennett
Dube-(Monahan?/Hathaway/Lazar)

Yeah. Either way. crazy balance. we haven't had this kind of depth. It's refreshing.

Definitely a surplus of PK'ers

This actually works out perfect, imo. James Neal should be a first liner in ice time and will produce if given this time. Give him PP time and first line shifts after Lindholm kills a PP and Neal likely hits his first line minutes overall.

Perfect.

Presumably all four will start the season in the AHL. #Flames

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Curtis Lazar is practicing with the #Flames once again this morning. Final roster comes out this afternoon, guessing around noon Calgary time.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
#Flames at practice today; expect this tomorrow in Van:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Dube-Ryan-Neal
Bennett-Jankowski-Czarnik

Giordano-Brodie
Hanifin-Hamonic
Valimaki-Stone

Smith
Rittich
Let's compare this with last year's crew (for the purposes of comparison, I choose the opening night lineup):

Gaudreau=Gaudreau, healthy Monahan>injured Monahan, Lindholm>Ferlund
3rd year Tkachuk>2nd year Tkachuk, Backlund=Backlund, Frolik=Frolik
Dube>>Versteeg, Ryan=Bennett, Neal>>>Brouwer
Bennett>>>Glass, Jankowski>>Stajan, Czarnik>>Hathaway

Giordano=Giordano, Brodie<Hamilton
Hanifin>>L side Brodie, Hamonic=Hamonic
Valimaki>>Bartkowski, Stone=Stone

1 year older Smith<last year's Smith
2nd year Rittich>rookie Rittich

So we have 2 minor downgrades, 7 players who should perform similarly to last year, 4 modest upgrades (2 on the top line), and 7 major upgrades compared with last year. In other words, more than half of the lineup has been upgraded, and a third of it has been upgraded significantly, if you accept the player comparisons I have outlined above.

Oh, and Peters>Gulutzan and anyone>>>Cameron.

Really, the only question is in goal, where the team could be derailed by regression or injury affecting Smith. If he manages to perform as well as he did last year, and if a more experienced Rittich can pick up a few more games, we should have a much better year in 2018-19.

I think the top PK units will be:

Backlund-Frolik
Jankowski-Bennett
Lindholm-Czarnik/Dube/Tkachuk

Backs-Fro, Janko-Benny just have such good chemistry on the PK I would keep them as pairs.

13-23-18 will jump over the boards right after a kill.

Pretty much agreed with the whole thing. But if I had to nitpick, not enough >s on these ones.

The way this team has focused on face offs and brought in people who are right handed will be a small but important improvement. Look at the 4th line where you have 3 natural centers, and again you can choose who takes what draw, depending on the circumstances. Just adding Ryan and Lindholm increased our likely % wins.
It’s these “little things” that makes me happy....

I dont agree with Hamilton > Brodie. Until Brodie proves that he is a legitimate top pairing defensemen again, Hamilton >>> Brodie.

This is a team us Flame fans have been waiting for. Fast, balanced, and coming at you wave after wave. I haven't been this excited for the start of a season for a long time.

IMO best Flames starting lineup since 1989. I am excited about this teams potential. The only question mark is in goal and Smitty could easily pleasantly surprise us as he did last year.

It's reasonable to say that he needs to prove it. However, his performance with the Flames has always seemed to be related to who he is playing with and which side he is playing on. Giordano already looks even better than he did last year, and I suspect this is because he is comfortable with Brodie and feels more free to jump into the action in the offensive zone. From what I have seen so far, Brodie has been less prone to defensive zone gaffes than Hamilton was (remember the season-long woes/whoas of Hamilton thread?). So, while Brodie may not put up as many points as Hamilton did, the pairing will probably be almost as effective as last year's first pairing was.

Brodie with Gio is just fine, but on an individual basis he's not as good. And defensive zone gaffes? Brodie had a truckload in the last couple years (and a fair number of neutral zone/offensive blue line ones).

Does anyone have some advanced stats for Brodie?

Some hero charts or corsi or HDCP4KHDVD ratings?
