I also think there is a good chance he works his way onto the third pairing by the end of the season. If Andersson is recalled and then makes it impossible to send him down the Flames likely make moves to keep him in Calgary.

I wonder if Peters is going to play the matchup game with the Backlund line, to start the season.
An all situation, all difficult minutes line to ease the gelling of the other guys. I wouldn't be crazy about Neal or the Czar playing that role for now.
It makes sense, and it frees up the other lines a bit to get some favourable zone starts.
I wouldn't expect it to be the norm for the entirety of the season, but I think its a smart way to try and get off to a good start.

It is so hard to judge the AHL vs part time NHL route because you can never compare. I remember having a huge discussion over Joe Thorton, I thought he was better served playing 4th line part time in the NHL over going down again. Granted I think it would have been junior and he had nothing left to prove there, so the AHL option might have been different.
In retrospect it probably worked out good for him with that first season of limited action. He has had a good career, but there is always the question of could it have been better if he was given more playing time? Could he have turned out worse had he been sent down and not experienced the NHL speed? Is it only because he had such elite talent?
All questions that NHL GMs and Coaches get paid to answer, but in the end I don't think there is a magic recipe, and both methods can be considered effective if used the right way, and neither should be considered crazy.

also pk pairings are
Backlund-Frolik
Jankowski-Bennett
That way the lines don't get scrambled after a penalty.

I think this is right, but there is nothing in Mangiapane's development track and in his game today that suggests to me that he is better off in Calgary than playing big minutes in the AHL. On the other hand, given his short season in 2017–18 I think a good case can be made that it would be very beneficial to see him dominate that league for a year. On the balance, this decision is an easy one.

I find it hilarious that not only did the Flames snipe the Canucks on Tkachuk but we graduated our Finnish defenseman first too. :P

That should pretty much seal Lazar's fate would it not? At least in the short term. Down he goes.

I wonder if Dube changes his number.
EliteProspects also has Dube's stat bar for 2018/19 as Calgary Flames. Neat!

Is it correct that the 9 game contract rule doesn't apply to Valimaki?

Celebrated Square Root Day

Lazar has such a fantastic attitude. What a refreshingly candid and positive remark to make at a very difficult time for him. Just got beat out of an NHL job, says exactly where he wants to play, but makes sure to offer gratefulness to the organization and a happiness to stay here at whatever level.

It applies to Valimaki. If he plays 10 or more NHL games it will use up a year of his ELC.
