Practice notes Oct 1 Lazar with team. Mangiapane & Gillies missing. Rittich is backup
After clearing waivers, Lazar is still with the team.
Kulak also cleared but not at practice.
Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
No Kulak on the ice for Flames. Lazar is though. Andersson, Dube, Valimaki and Prout are on the ice. Matthew Tkachuk is back after missing the third period of Saturday’s game. No Mangiapane.
Wes Gilbertson @WesGilbertson
now
Based on line rushes today, #Flames likely look for season-opener ...
Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Dube-Ryan-Neal
Bennett-Jankowski-Czarnik
Giordano-Brodie
Hanifin-Hamonic
Valimaki-Stone
Smith
Rittich

Gillies also not at practice:
Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Despite clearing waivers, Lazar is still with the team at practice this morning.
Mangiapane, Peluso, Kulak, and Gillies not out there, however. #Flames

So 8 defensemen perhaps. With Lazar as extra forward.
They're not going to carry two rookie defensemen for very long. Especially with at least one not playing.

Hathaway would be 13th forward and Lazar the 14th, no? So can’t have 8 D
I think the team just wanted flexibility at D and at F in case better options were available on waivers. They can send Lazar/Mang/Valimaki/Dube/Anderson/Peluso down at any time now

Maybe Kulak couldn't handle the ego blow.
Put on waivers twice since the last real NHL game hes played and nobody cared.

I dont know how I feel about Lazar still being around. I had really high hopes for him but when he was waived I felt that the experiment was over.

I would be a little disappointed if Mangiapane is sent down in favour of Lazar. I think he should definitely make the team even as the 13th forward. Even if he doesn't play every game, he will benefit more practicing against Giordano and Brodie than playing against AHL players imo.

That's still an extra player no? One of Valimaki or Andersson would have to go down. Maybe it's so close they're deciding it in practice

I feel like they are more comfortable carrying Lazar as an extra forward than Peluso, so a box rotational. That still leaves questions about Hathaway though.
I feel like it would benefit Lazar to go to the AHL though, he could at least get more playing time on Stockton's top six. I feel like could perform much better down there rather than having a punching bag like Peluso doing it.

The only players that can be sent down before tomorrow's deadline are:
Gillies
Andersson
Valimaki
Kulak
Dube
Manigiapane
Peluso
Lazar
Assuming their absence from practice means they have been demoted. The list becomes.
Andersson
Valimaki
Dube
Lazar
One of those 4 needs to be cut for the Flames to have a 23 man roster. (Barring a trade of some sort)

I doubt any NHL coaches or managers would agree with that. Mangiapane clearly would benefit more from playing top line in the AHL vs sitting in the press box here. Silly suggestion

It's fine, he'll likely be in the press box. Part of me hoped he'd be sent down for his and Stockton's benefit. He just doesn't have the finish for NHL goals, be he seems like the type that would put up high AHL numbers.
Kind of like Kenny Agostino.

I always wonder what stops some reporters from being respectful but controversial at the same time. At some point, why doesn't a reporter ask Treliving on how much impact Lazar not going to the AHL is because the team paid a second round pick to acquire him and is afraid of admitting mistakes. It can even be framed as "In the pre-season, how hard is it to send down players that the team paid premium price for? Do they have a leg up because management doesn't want to admit that they made a mistake"
Obviously, Tre would give a pretty standard answer but at least inside he will know what people are thinking.

In Toronto you'll see this kind of questioning all the time. Calgary media aren't as bad as Edmonton, but they definitely play really nice and keep things rosy for the most part.

I don't think they ask the question because even in your nice way of phrasing it - it is a loaded question.
Which will basically ensure you don't have a healthy relationship with that person going forward. Good way to ensure you never get a quote again.
A better approach is to leave it more open ended
"Apart from on-ice performance, are there other factors that you weigh when making these roster decisions? What are things that come in to play?"

If Lazar is the extra forward, it could very well be a situation where he's the guy get spot duty, but if there is an injury, a guy like Eat Bread calls up and slides into the line-up ahead of Lazar.

Oh, I didn't know you have the inside track on what all NHL coaches or managers think.
If you didn't end with the "silly suggestion" comment, I would respect you and your post a lot more. That being said, you are obviously right, no one should ever sway away from conventions! What has happened for hundreds of years should continue... Do you also not believe in women's suffrage?
I am not suggesting what I am saying will definitely work. However, unless you can provide a study on why the status quo is the best alternative, then no, you have no credentials to call my suggestion silly bud. You see new strategies always being implemented in sports.
