Predict the first trade
With the preseason over and the roster having to be set soon, what do you think will be the first trade the Flames make? For the most part, I think the team is in a really great position when it comes to forwards and D and will likely have to put one or two decent guys on waivers. I think they could use some help in net though and could see a guy like Kulak being dealt for a depth goalie or a "goon" type player.
My guess is Kulak for Sparks. I think they'll go after Sparks if he hits the waiver wire but if he's claimed off of waivers he has to stay on the roster and if they trade for him and it isn't working out, they can send him down.
Are there any other teams that might put a decent goalie on waivers? Will the leafs be facing the same situation with Picard too?

Kulak
Lazar
Bennett
Gilies
Pick
In some kind of a combination for a future starter goalie

I could see a move for some goaltending depth. As far as physicality goes, they already have Prout & Pelusso. I don't see a scenario where they add another player of this type.

Is that a deal the Flames would make, though?

No thanks to trading another first. If it's something Treliving wants to do then at least not back to back years, and not for a pure rental.
Besides, let's be honest. It's Ottawa. They probably take that deal for Schneider and Peluso

Give up Bennett for a season of Varly? No, it would have to be a younger goalie they could keep long term.

He could probably be re-signed, but either way a younger goalie with term you dont get with Bennett unless he's packaged with something much more valuable

Gaudreau - Mony - Tkachuk
Duchene - Backlund - Lindholm
Bennett - Jankowski - Neal
Dube - Ryan - Czarnik
Duchene could be a big part of the core if we can get him yo sign here

What year is it?
(I actually think he could work here too... But it just feels like the same statement was probably said on here years ago)

No question, but the signing here thing is the hang up after reading his comments about being interested in testing free agency

Gillies or Rittich + 3rd for Saros...something like that.
Calgary needs to find someone who can take over for Smith this year and I think both Rittich and Gillies will be ready in 2-3 more years. That timeline fits better with where Nashville is at with Rinne.

That really jacks the price of the trade up though, and does he fit in the cap structure? He's probably looking for quite a contract and even with getting Frolik off the book I think a Tkachuk extension cuts into the money Duchene would want.
I like Duchene I just don't see the fit

Why would Nashville trade Saros? Rinne's a UFA at the end of the year, and by nearly every account I've heard/read Saros will be their goalie moving forward. Some think he will be Nashville's starting G by the playoffs.
The situation there is pretty much the same as Tampa had two seasons ago with Bishop & Vas.
I would be shocked if Nashville traded Saros. They certainly won't do it for the two magic beans you're suggesting.

It only jacks the price up if theres another team willing to offer more than that, and Duchene willing to sign there too.
Flames could make it work by unloading Stone, and possibly Brodie for a first if he has a good year and our young defence are proven ready to replace him.
