If Canada Was The Only Country In The World...
Another thread on another board about if one morning we woke up and the US were the only country left in the world with everything else replaced by ocean, got me thinking about starting a thread on what would happen if one morning, Canadians woke up and the rest of the world was gone, replaced by ocean, and only Canada was left. (Hrm, that was my longest run-on sentence, evar!)
So what would happen? Ottawa would become the capital city of the world, and because they exert so much control already, I could see the rest of the country splitting off into seperate countries if things don't go their way.
Obviously, Alberta would be extremely important, because we would need to provide the oil for all the cars to run in the east as well as here. If the east tries to exert too much control over Alberta's resources, I could see a civil war on the horizon, because there is no way our current armed forces could keep an entire province subjugated. (I think regular personnel in the armed forces only numbers about 60,000 at the moment)
Who would be the most powerful? What about fresh water, farming, food, etc.?

The US is left too? The 2 countries would merge, one way or another... we don't have any leverage to enforce our independence from the US if we're the only 2 countries left in the world. I don't know that it would be a hostile takeover so much as a desperate merger. The capital of the world would be in Washington D.C.

Why wouldn't Ottawa remain the capital?

Since Canada is multicultural, you may see groups or countires form based on relgious belief within Canada. That would be a lot different from the current canada.

Well, how much O&G does Canada actually use? Seeing as we're a net exporter of O & G, I don't think Alberta would be quite as important. As well we could just use all the offshore for ourselves..
Additionally summer's would suck. No southern hemisphere to vacation too.
Most of my family would be dead
At least if we were the US and the last country around we'd still have the entertainment industry.. No movies, no good shows, no 24.. Maybe a low budget BSG could still be run
It'd would suck, plain and simple

The boring scientific connotations such as how climate would change due to new ocean currents which affects food production etc would make Canada a completely different place.
Trying to think of something funny to say but failing miserably at the moment.

I'd be dead. Or at least floating for 72 hours, until I was dead.
So I don't really care.
I hope you guys like seafood!

Fishing would start up again, just because other countries would stop trawling the ocean and scooping them all up off our coast. This would mean a lot more fish for everyone. I imagine the Maritimes would be a pretty hot vacation spot, as well as Vancouver, but if every other country was replaced by ocean, ironically, Lethbridge could become hot beachfront property too!

The population of Canada might decrease considerably because I'm assuming that a lot of it depends upon immigrants coming from another country? Or am I wrong here? I know that's the case in the US..if there was no Mexico or other foreign countries, there might not be many people left since it's dependant upon immigrants
