I wonder what's the thinking that goes into waiving someone like Lazar.
Do you do it early in the preseason when everyone is just chucking out players so it kinda flys under the radar.
Or would you hold onto him to the last possible day so that it's a 'tougher' choice for other GMs to make since they have their rosters made up.
I mean of course we don't want to loose Lazar, that would be unfortunate, but wouldn't it be best to waive him early so that he's no so much of a 'standout' player?

The strategy for waiving Lazar is pretty easy.
You waive him. The next day he clears. There are Lazars waived every day in the preseason.

They wont waive Lazar because they know that the scum up north will grab their home town boy and rub him in our noses lol

Honestly, I think given the depth of the team, I doubt the Flames are worried about losing Lazar at all.
Obviously Treliving saw something in him to give up the second well over a year ago. But a mid-20-year-old 2 goal scorer is worth nothing in the NHL. Paying him $1,050,000 to play in the AHL is not something that the team wants to do.
The question on their minds isn't about protecting him from being claimed as much as whether another player, say Dube, pushes him off the team costing them roughly $1,000,000 this season. Or if it's not worth it to have him in the pressbox as a warm body.

Rub our noses in being stuck with yet another non-NHL player on their NHL roster?

Sure, however if he is cut.
He is likely one of the last roster decisions to be made.

Like it or not, I think the logic is that they don't waive him because he makes the Flames.

I honestly can't see any of these guys getting claimed.

Thought Klimchuk looked alright but I'm also not against them cutting down to their full roster sooner than Gulutzan always did.
Annoyed Lazar is still up. Wouldn't mind seeing him and Hathaway sent down

I’m not sure any team is chomping at the bit to snatch up the smoking hot commodity that is Curtis Lazar. If waived he should clear no problem. I’d be more upset if he made the team than if he was waived and picked up.

Curious who you think should our 13th/14th forward should be if both are sent down.

He has stone hands and a very classically bottom six skill level, but he was somewhat effective on our fourth line last year. He's not a guy you're worried about sitting in the press box unlike, say, Mangiapane and he's arguably the fastest forward on our team who also has some size to him. He also had a nice setup to Phillips in the previous game - Peters was actually praising Mangiapane-Gawdin-Lazar as a line even though most of us were praising Bennett-Jankowski-Frolik.
He's not in a battle for a top twelve position, but I'd prefer him over a lot of other options (e.g. Hathaway, Peluso) as the 13th/14th forward

Plugging away at 0.65 points per game with some solid defensive play in the AHL is nothing to scoff at, but in reality Klimchuk was never really in contention to make the team barring him taking a huge step forward.
Dube, Mangiapane, Foo, Czarnik, and Hathaway are all ahead of him on the depth chart. It seems like Lazar is as well, although I'm not sure I agree with that.

I kind of like the idea of rotating our 13/14 forwards. It seems these type of guys play better the first couple games. TBH, I think I'd go with Lomberg as an extra to start the season

I imagine that Lazar would make an excellent extra Fwd. Along with Peluso, you’ve got some speed or some muscle to add depending on the game demands. But you don’t care if eat popcorn. They might not be the best available forwards, but they do bring qualities that the others might not.
I do agree that the top 12 should more or less be who deserves it most. Forwards 13 and 14 can be more unique role players and that’s ok, it gives the coach flexibility game to game. And that’s ignoring the ‘stunted development’ of putting someone like Mangiapane in the press box for 70 games.
