It goes both ways...some are saying he was the best player on the ice in these two games which is laughable.

Zero results...I heard that many times last season too. I think its just put up or shut up time for many. I hope he puts up

Talking about last season...and the point still stands

We are not missing our PP QB now that Hamilton is gone, that is what I was responding to. Flames have all the pieces they need to have a good PP, they just need to do it. I also wouldn't get too bent outta shape just yet. New players, China, big ice, next to no practice time ect.

Their team speed is drawing penalties, just need to get it rolling.

A PP QB is responsible for helping gaining the zone and managing the puck at the blueline. That was never Hamilton's role on the PP. Given Hanifin's zone gaining ability (ZGA) I would try him on the first PP unit and see how he fares.

Haven't watched the game yet, but this is what Derek Wills said on the radio this morning. Well, he said he "might just have been the best". Seems like most of the neutral people feel he had two great games.

Bennett was one of the top players today. Hustled his butt off. Created good opportunities, PK work with Janko was top notch (In fact, they were rewarded with PP time in the 3rd for their PK work and good overall play). What else? Hit like a truck. If this was Ferland everyone would be splooging all over everything.

Maybe I'm a Sam Bennett apologist. But today was not a day anyone could critique Bennetts play negatively. He was good.

Hanifin's gap control was pretty great!

I know most teams do it now, but I dislike 4 forwards on the PP, especially when you only leave one man up top, creates way to many chances for the other team, the risk outweighs the reward in my opinion. That said, losing Hamilton is a big gap in having a 2nd offensive dman. I think if they keep using the 1-3-1 PP, or whatever it is, they will see a lot of breakaways and short handed goals scored against them.

Goaltending was the difference in both games.

Almost seems like they weren’t the problem. Coaching, systems, linemates, motivation, wrong flavour Gatorade...

As Strange Brew pointed out in another thread:
It’s not that they don’t share the same opinion, it’s that people are unfairly writing off a very young NHLer who has loads of skill. You think Bennett is a bust? Then sorry but the reality is you’re an impatient spoiled fan. At his age with what he’s shown so far he can’t be labelled a bust or a lemon. You can’t tell me that Monahammee’s post wasn’t laughably bad, it was embarrassingly bad. And yes, some people whine and whine and whine about Bennett so the whiner label seems very apt. Just calling it as I see it. Some of these posters need to step up and be better. Yes I’m talking to you Bennett haters like pepper24 and Monahammer.

I cannot determine who is a fan or not, that’s silly. I sure can question the fandom of those who continually want to crap on one of our youngest NHLers who still has a good upside. Shouldn’t “fans” of the Flames be cheering for our young players to succeed? What kind of fan just craps all over young players with upsides and wants them dealt? It’s a very fair question is it not? Not sure why you take offense.

I was pleasantly surprised with Prout. I was expecting Anders Ericsson or Nicklaus Grossman type play but he’s a lot closer to Engelland. He wins his physical puck battles and keeps things simple.

I see a lot more in Hanifins game than I did in Hamilton’s. Just in the defensive side alone, he looks miles better and if he can contribute similar offense, he’s going to be a stud. When he is on, he controls the game.

I was thinking of the exact same thing.

Guy defended Brouwer nearly every morning all last season

Really? It's a preseason game against the Boston Bruins. Does anyone actually care that the Flames "lost" this game? Does the team even care?

Maybe not directly but yeah, he was making a point that he defends players that perhaps don't need defending cause their performance is lacking. I didn't see either game but have seen enough of Bennet to say I see each sides point honestly.

Bennet is young and definitely has skills but his hockey IQ doesn't seem horrible but it's not a super strength either. He frustrates me personally because he does have a decent enough skill set that I would believe he should be producing more, but he hasn't to this point. The dude flat out hussles though and is quite tough and plays a hard game. I love that about him. I'm a fan of his honestly and want him to break out as bad as all of us in sure.

Fact of the matter is, until he does break out he is going to get the treatment he's been receiving whether that's fair or not.

Linemates and ice time? Beartschi went from a replacement player in Calgary to playing in the top-six and eventually the first line in Vancouver. Having a 35-point player on the top line is not great.

But he didn't defend Bennett. He volunteered his opinion that he stood out as one of the best players in those two games, which is the limited subject matter that was being discussed.
