So, it's all ending on my 50th birthday?!!! Some kind of gift that is. Just in case the prediction is in error, I am going to hedge my bets and offer you $1,000 for your stuff (including house). Think of what you can do with $1,000 in 5 days!

Depends on your experience. I've been very close to two suicides preceded by a long downfalls in which I gave years of time, energy, assistance and everything else I had to try to help to no avail. It actually made me a strong proponent for doctor-assisted suicide for both physical and mental illness. One of the suicides I felt (and still feel) relief for the person. A few decades of living in his own personal hell was long enough.
Helping somebody reaching out for help, I'm there all day long. Trying to insert myself into somebody's life who A. Isn't looking for help, and B. May not even know they need help is not something I'll get involved with again. It's too risky for your own sanity and that energy is better directed at things you can control.

Unfortunately there is a good chance he's right. Unless she actually does something violent to herself or others, there is no way to get her committed. Even if she threatens violence, it's probably 50/50 at best that she would be taken in by the police to see a doctor. And then it's 50/50 at best whether the doctor will choose to commit her, or just turn her back out to the street.
It's completely unrealistic to say 'seek expert help'. There is no expert help for something like this. Unless you can convince her to voluntarily go in, no-one will see her. Even if she does volunteer, the odds of getting help are not high.
The cold hard facts are that the OP is likely screwed. Either his sister is an idiot and fell for some ridiculous conspiracy theories, in which case he's basically screwed, because there's no cure for idiocy and it's not likely to work it's way out if she's already an adult. Or, she is mentally ill, in which case he and his family will face a lifetime of problems with her, and there is almost no mechanism to get any real help in Alberta (or most other places for that matter).

I was successful in getting one of the people I was helping committed, but they didn't keep him for long. If as the patient you acquiesce to what the doctors want you to do, which is not hard to do if you don't actually want help, you can get out of there pretty quickly. That's fair, too. The doctors have limited resources and should be focusing on the people they can really help versus the people that don't want the help.

BTW, I read a thread on Reddit recently where an expert on suicide was saying reading about suicide can actually increase suicidal thoughts for somebody already with those tendencies. Since this conversation steered in that direction a little, it's okay to avoid this thread if it's not helpful for you. Also, here is a handy number in case you need assistance.
Calgary Distress Centre

Hi Derek,
First I think you should be commended for this. It can be a pretty hard topic to say the least and I think it shows how much you care about your sister.
First off I would suggest contacting someone about this to discuss your concerns and to direct you to who can potentially help if needed/desired. In this regard one place you could start with is 211 Alberta - http://www.ab.211.ca . They are an information and referral source (I think the United way and/or distress centre are involved?), and can help you start the process. You can pick up your phone and dial 2-1-1 I believe and you should be connected with someone to help.
Second, it can be overwhelming, so don't forget to take care of yourself - talking to someone can help in this regard. So I also suggest giving a place like the Distress Centre a call (or 211 can suggest alternatives) for you, if needed, if you wanted to talk to someone. You don't have to be in a crisis yourself; even if you just want someone just to "talk to" feel free to give them a call.
And otherwise, I agree with some others in here, I'm surprised by some of the posts from people about this.

Thats not the right number. For a crisis/distress call the number is 403-266-HELP (4357).

The 1601 number is the distress centre's main office number. They'll transfer you to the 24 hour line (if you call during business hours). The 4357 number is the 24/7 direct to someone line.

I got the impression this was very erratic and out of character for the sister. That is what makes me think this is beyond just stumbling on some conspiracy stuff.
In my personal life when I have seen stuff like this come from nowhere, it has generally been rooted as a mental disorder of some type.
Its hard for any of us to know, but thats the way I would lean.
I'd reiterate, a conversation by the OP and a trained psychologist probably needs to happen, and the professional should have some decent ideas as to what is going on once they are able to dig deeper about the specific situation... and hopefully provide the OP with some tools and a gameplan that has a chance of working with the sister.

Okay these are more texts from her today. Looks like she’s citing everything from a message board.
“My sources are the mother of all sources. 8 chan. Professional hackers, anons, audits, who hack, dig and find the truth. They do this for a living. Here is a link to one of their boards. Just lurk and read. All links, docs, etc can be found here.”

“Truths will be coming out soon about Hollywood, political and religious sick people. They are satanic pedovores. Read that again. Yes. They kill, eat, sacrifice kids! Including the pope, opera, billary, Steven cobere, the royals and many more! World wide.”

Ugh.
I don't know what to say for advice. It looks like she's dug in deep, and any attempts to get her help or to convince her that she's falling for conspiracy theories are probably going to be met with hostility, regardless of whether this is stemming from a mental illness or her just genuinely believing these things are true . It sucks you and your family have to go through this. One tip I do have is really, really monitor the contact she has with other people in your family, in particular any kids. In fact, I wouldn't allow any contact between her and your kids.
I hope she gets some help. Best of luck with the situation.

FWIW, extreme gullibility is a sign of a whole host of things ranging from personality disorders, schizo, to dementia.
Might not be the case, but generally sound minded people with reasonably normal life experiences and available education can easily discern the difference between propaganda such as that, and factual evidence. They would at least be in a position to be a heck of a lot more skeptical before taking the ball and running with it as fact.

Yeah, she somehow fell for an elaborate troll job pretty much. Unfortunate, certainly, but not as dangerous as going through some form of psychosis. Well assuming she doesn't get the idea to attack a pizza place because it harbours pedophiles. Although, I don't know how you could be on that website for more than all of 10 seconds and realize it's not serious or credible.
Again, saying this as a non-expert.

I don't think a thread on how your sister is crazy is helping her at all. This thread is toxic.

Don’t think his sister is reading the thread, nor do we know who she is. No harm, no foul.
The objective here is for Derek to gather some opinions and thoughts on the matter to help guide an actionable plan or at least understand what may be happening here.
There is enough good intent in the thread that I think it’s a worthwhile venture.

I have a buddy who buys into these theories. I don’t think he’s crazy, but he does lack the skills to think critically.
