Bennett plus d prospects for Bobrovsky? He's UFA at end of year so not sure better to trade ahead with hopes to re-sign or wait until summer and sign him as UFA without giving up assets.
Still only 29 years old. Smith might be too old and Riitich/Gillies/Parson not ready as starter next season.
Let's say you you want to sell your car, it's worth $15,000, but you want $20,000. Your best friend offers you $20,000, and the person you hate most in your life offers you $30,000.
You sell it to your best friend, cause eff that other guy.
You didn't give your friend a discount, he still over paid in the end.
This is what Tavares did to the Leafs.
THis car in your example is worth $30,000.

This is exactly what a discount is. Your second sentence doesn't mean anything. A discount is taking less than he could have got, not ranking himself amongst his peers in terms of production and assigning himself a relative salary.
Where do you come up with some of this stuff?
So McDavid is on a discount?
A discount contract in hockey terms is a contract where the player is paid less per year relative to his peers.
Like Stamkos.
Essentially every top player in the NHL is playing at a "discount" according to you because they all could have gotten more if they wanted.
A guy like Doughty could have easily went UFA and said I want cap max and gotten it.
Judging players by their relative worth is really the only way to go about things. Use common sense.

I'd rather just back up the money truck to Bobrovsky's house if we're going that route.
It's not like there are a ton of teams willing to pay huge coin to a goalie. At a glance, the Flames, Red Wings, Columbus, and the Islanders would seem to be the most logical spots based on need. Maybe Philadelphia. And Calgary is the best fit of all of them if you're a 29 year old guy who wants to win.

If you could sell it for $30,000 and you sell it for $20,000, you sold it at a discount.
In this case, the actual value is irrelevant, but if you need to state that, it's FMV is actually $30,000, which is what a person is willing to pay for it.
A discount is when you sell something for less than you could actually get in the marketplace.

This is just getting silly and completely unnecessary.
A discount contract in the NHL is when you get more value from the player than you are paying for. Gaudreau under $7 million is now looking like a great discount contract.
If Brouwer would have signed a 4 year, $17.5 million dollar contract with any other team, instead of the 4 year $18 million dollar contract the Flames gave him, do you really feel that other team would have got Brouwer on a great discount contract? I'd say he still would have been ridiculously over paid, but you're saying it's a discount, because the Flames were willing to pay even more.
As Oil Stain pointed out, that means essentially every NHLer is on a discount contract, as there's likely another team that would have paid a little bit more for that player.
If you actually believe the Leafs got Tavares on a discount at $11 Million dollars per year, making him the second highest paid player in the NHL, just because someone else was willing to pay more, then have at it.

I am not sure the Flames would be able to sign extensions for Bob and Tkachuk if they made that deal. Bobrovsky likely would become the highest paid player on the team and not ideal in my opinion.
If the Flames move Stone and Frolik there is some potential there but our weak prospect pool takes a hit giving up one of Valimaki/Andersson/Kylington along with one of our young NHLers in Bennett.
I would rather go with Smith this year and see what shakes out over the course of the season/summer
65M with:
9 forwards signed (Tkachuk, and 3 depth players needed)
5 defenseman signed (3 depth players needed)
1 defenseman signed (Bobrovsky)
Plus buyouts
Assume Andersson, Kylington, Valimaki, Foo, Dube and Phillips make up the majority of those depth players at around 5M.
So 70M with Tkachuk and Bobrovsky to sign. Maybe a cap ceiling of 84Mish. It's getting dicey, but possible if each signed 7M contracts. Bobrovsky will be 30, so a long-term contract could be under 7M.

Your obsession with dealing Bennett is laughable. If he’s as bad as you say he is then his value isn’t high either,

Agreed. Smith is definitely still a viable option as a #1 for this season so no real need to go out and trade for Bob this year.
Signing Bob on July01 would be ideal, although we would most likely have to trade both Frolik and Stone to make it work cap wise. With an extra year of pro hockey, it's not far fetched to think that 2 of Foo, Mangipane, Dube, Valimaki, Andersson or Kylington could replace Frolik and Stone.

No, a discount contract is one where the player takes less than he could have got on the open market to stay with his current team. McNugget could have waited to pick between 20+ offer sheets if he wanted to. He could have chosen 15M x 5yrs to lead straight to free agency at the earliest possible date. He is a special case however, noone else would be worth a max contract and max compensation. He's worth every penny, Draiwhatever is overpaid by at least 1.5M, Lucic is a 6M joke, Russell is overpaid by 2M, Kassian is overpaid by $500K, RNH is overpaid by at least 1M probably 2M, the list goes on.

Thats correct...Bennett would not return much of anything cause he hasn't proven he is anything more than an average 3rd line winger. Those aren't in great demand.

I thought Bennett showed some great flashes... it’s been one game that’s completely out of the norm as far as pre-season games go. Hardly ‘so disappointing’

Sure, Bennett's always had flashes. Dustin Boyd had flashes too. Not at all what you hope for out of the highest pick in franchise history.

Wonder if the Flames can make a play for Bobrovsky?
Terrible situation for Blue Jackets fans with the team’s two best players wanting out. IMO they can’t afford to lose both players and should trade one and overpay the other to stay. Ideally that would mean overpaying Panarin and trading Brobovsky for a package that includes a highly rated goaltending prospect.

I agree. I think it’s time to accept that Bennett is in all likelihood an average 3rd/4th line winger. Definitely not what you want in a #4 overall pick but still a serviceable player. Dal Colle was drafted 5th and he’s put up totally unremarkable stats in the AHL. Fleury was drafted 7th and he hasn’t accomplished much in the AHL either. Perlini, drafted 12th has stats very similar to Bennett. Sam’s entering his 5th year in the league and if he was going to breakout in any fashion like others of his draft class (Draisaitl, Nylander, Ehlers, Larkin) it would’ve happened by now. Even Sam Reinhart who has been a bit of a disappointment as a #2 pick is showing signs of progression. Bennett is not.
