Ken Holland says Zetterberg is done playing hockey

On Friday morning, Red Wings GM Ken Holland shared the inevitable. Zetterberg has met with doctors and the conclusion is that he can’t play hockey anymore because of his degenerative back injury. This is it for the Red Wings captain.

Hall of Fame?
Of course this means he won't officially retire. He will be on LTIR until his contract runs out.

He had one hell of a career. Good luck in the future Zetterberg.

Loved watching him play, even though it was for Detroit, it was great being able to see a player of his caliber in his prime.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he would still be playing if he wasn't injured. This is Henrick Zetterberg we are talking about.

Man he was a great player to watch.
Arizona Coyotes fans must be really excited to have such an amazing player ready to join their roster.

OK, what does that have to do with it at all? He has indicated he is not playing again. That is retired. He is never coming back so how does that qualify for long term injury reserve?

Here is another wrinkle: if one of us were suddenly physically debilitated to the point that we were unable to continue in our professions, but still had the option to take home the remaining salary on our contracts, how many of us would say, “nah, I’m good. I’ll just retire. You guys keep your money.”
Not many, I warrant.

He is retiring due to injuries caused while playing hockey, if he were healthy he would have fulfilled his contract.
I can put it another way, if Henrik Zetterberg, the captain of the Detroit Red Wings was able to play, he would. But because of his injuries sustained over the past few years from playing hockey. He is unable to. Sounds like LTIR to me.

Its a forced retirement due to injury, meaning he would still play if possible
That is still LTIR

Its a tough one, he was one of the most amazing talents to watch but he has been battling injuries on and off since forever, this was really only a matter of time, and really, timing.

And he signed this contract well before he turned 35 under a different CBA, so that stipulation doesn't apply here either.
A great player and good soldier, but his body broke down before he could fulfill his contract. HHOF for sure.

Not officially retiring means his contract is still on the books year from year correct? Therefore they need to be cap compliant at the start of the season with his salary. Once the season starts they can LTIR him but before that he counts this making a bit of a headache for Holland. I think we want that dont we?

You going to be the one to tell him to leave almost $5.5 million on the table?

No, the NHL should. I get this is because it is Zetterberg and the Red Wings who have nothing to do with us but if it was Lucic and the Oilers instead you would be singing a different song and so would the others that are defending it. He is not playing anymore, he won't be playing anymore, he is retired. Not long term injured on the reservation he might or could return, he is done. It is cap circumvention to the clearest extent.

He is hurt. You are saying that he got hurt on the job, can no longer do that job, and should not get paid. I hope you don't have employees, I sure wouldn't want to be one of them.

So all the players over the years who have suffered career ending injuries who are on LTIR year after year, like Smid or Savard were also cap circumvention?
I don’t think this is it. He is injured, it’s simple, if he could play he would. What hockey player just quits and retires when he could still play?
