Even worse news for the Sens but great news for the Avs. Pageau was injured in fitness testing today:

Renaud Lavoie @renlavoietva
According to multiple sources, news are not good regarding Jean-Gabriel Pageau today. Could be out from 4 to 6 months and a surgery to repair a Achilles’ tendon could be necessary. @Senators

Yikes.... Sure seems like Melnyk made a bad deal with the devil for that one playoff run.

When the photos of crowd sizes start rolling in the images are going to be shocking. There are gonna be mid week games in the middle of the winter with crowds less than 5000 almost assuredly.

5000 might be generous...

oh man, listening to Dorion speak was painful. I am happy we have a guy like Tre to listen too and to lead our team. Sounded incompetent during that presser.

I feel so bad for the Sens. Everything seems to be falling apart for them. Listening to EK talk, it really sounds sour between him and the ownership/management. I think he is relieved to be traded and have this all behind him. SJ will be scary this season, I think they have a great shot at winning the division. Should be a fun season for us, not so much for the Sens.

Good for EK for escaping that mess but looking at the roster, I don't think they will finish last. I would take the bet that the Oilers will be worse this season. Haha, E=NG.

This feels like a Melnyk move tbh

Still can't believe they didn't get even one Blue Chip prospect in return for Karlsson.

Over the last 3 seasons:

Karlsson: 0.93 PPG
Burns: 0.89 PPG

No other d-man above 0.80 ppg...and now those two play on the same team with a player who's probably a top 5 defensive d-man in the league in Vlasic.

Nah, as bad as Edmonton is as a team, they still have McDavid and some other good players. He will get them to quite a few wins by himself. I don't know who could take over a game for the Senators.

Ok, my memory isn't the greatest, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here.

Some time last season (before the season?) Karlsson and the Sens have a falling out. It becomes public he won't re-sign and they will trade him.

Sens decide not to move him at the deadline because...reasons? They want to wait for a better return? Wait for teams to make moves, let the trade market heat up?

Then the end of the season comes and they don't trade him because...reasons? They want to wait until closer to the draft and let the market heat up?

Then the draft passes and we're told they were in no hurry. Now they're gonna wait until after free agency. That way teams will know their cap situation and the market for Karlsson will heat up and they can max their return? Maybe? But still nothing.

So they waited until the day before training camp started, knowing full well they had to trade him before camp or risk it turning into a sideshow and becoming a distraction (you know, like if a star player and your former star player's girlfriends were involved in a bizarre situation involving online harassment. That sort of thing.) And they waited this long because...reasons?
Other than being totally and complete morons and incompetent asset managers, am I missing anything? Why would Ottawa do this?

Sharks can trade from a position of strength rather than a position of weakness like the Sens.

It's a pure win no matter what happens. The chance of losing him outright to free agency is worth the trade and the positives, remove Karlsson and they only lost a little bit of easily replaceable depth. They will easily see value back from selling Karlsson jerseys
There's no scenario where they trade him at the deadline. That would be moronic.

And he won't have any value at the draft.

This is a huge all in by the Sharks.

That is a brutal return, this is the Senators version of the Gilmour trade.

Sharks attempting to go pickless? How many would they have left after Kane and Karl?

The Senators didn't get enough back, but if the Sharks don't at least make the Stanley Cup Finals or re-sign Karlsson they lose this trade as well.

I wonder what amount Karlsson signs for? I gather he is looking for 11-14 million.

Is that you Jay Feaster?

Sens aren't gonna spend that cap space...look at their ####ing roster they won't need cap space for years
