Oh... I thought you were driving something fast.
You can actually get an unrestored Mach 1 for next to nothing. It's harder to find a manual and if you want the work already done you'll pay more, but it's still not a prohibitively expensive classic. That's the Mustang I'd want, though obviously being almost 50 years old it's not fast either.
Anyway, back to speed limits.

Yeah...some want the badge and some want the ability.

I have voted for Druh Farrell twice in the two elections I've lived in ward 7. She does a great job of promoting my interests in the city and improving our community. Kermitology perfectly explained my position, which is relatively simple.
now you've seen two people say something positive about her.

Kind of like a lot of people in BC. Vote for party that will keep that pipeline out of your back yard even it creates hardship for Canada. Voting for Druh may be good for Ward 7 but it's bad for Calgary but you are well within your rights to vote that way.

Not sure it's as black and white as "voting for Druh is good for Ward 7 but bad for Calgary". I've also voted her in past elections. I think she's effective at promoting inner city interests AND improving Calgary as a whole.
That said, if you're the type who still thinks the Peace Bridge was a waste of money, I don't think you'll ever like her.

I'm not someone who objects to the Peace Bridge at all, but I definitely don't see how she's still an elected official after the Fluoride thing. That should have resulted in being run out of town on a rail.

Fair enough. Didn't mean to imply that all people who dislike Druh also hate the Peace Bridge, just that she has put herself out there and often for the betterment of the city. The Peace Bridge is a great example of that — something that she championed (at significant risk to her political career) that has benefited all Calgarians.
IMO she gets it right more often than not, but I'm not saying she's perfect. There are a lot of Druh haters out there, but her constituents seem to be happy with the work she's doing. To say that voting for Druh is the same as voting for the NDP in BC strikes me as disrespectful to the people who live in the inner city. We may have different priorities, but that doesn't make us any less Calgarian.
I don't really want to get into the fluoride debate because I agree with you, but if I recall correctly, her rationale was that it should be a provincial responsibility (which is both reasonable and true, although a touch idealistic).

I've heard, through a completely biased source, that Druh is the posterchild for why we need term limits in local government. Apparently she convinces someone to run against her in ward 7 every election as a way to split the popular vote of her main opposition.
Now I cannot name my source but it doesn't seem that far-fetched to me as she generally only wins with 35 - 40% of the popular vote but because the other candidates split votes by running on similar platforms she always gets back in...
also the peace bridge is ridiculous and adds nothing to the city. there are multiple bridges within 3 blocks either direction and it looks like a chinese fingertrap

It's like the Sun comment section found a time machine, set it ahead 5 years and then just kept going as they were.

here is what my councillor for Ward 12, Sean Keating, had to say when I emailed to let him know my thoughts
Quote:
Good afternoon Swarly. Thank you for adding your voice to this discussion.
For my part, I am supportive of lowering residential speed limits to enhance community safety. But I think we should take a more incremental approach and move to 40km/h before going down to 30km/h. I wrote about it in my latest blog: https://www.shanekeating.ca/2018/09/05/30km/.
Pedestrian collisions are a real thing that impacts people in this city. And in a lot of ways, those collisions are preventable. From my perspective this is about reasonable trade-offs. Calgary is actually trending in a positive direction when it comes to pedestrian related collisions. But this is a policy change that could bring that number even lower. Are we prepared to accept some rather negligible concessions for motorists to bring that figure even lower? I believe that is entirely reasonable.
By way of this email I am copying in my assistant Meghan. I have asked Meghan to catalog feedback from Ward 12 residents for my consideration when this item comes before Council on Monday. Thank you for adding your voice.
Regards,
|

Because of the extended Olympic discussions today, the debate on the speed reduction has been pushed back to the next City Council meeting in two weeks (Sept 24).

Thank you for taking the time to contact Councillor Demong’s office. Councillor Demong is not in favor of lowering the speed limit to 30 km in residential areas but will listen to both sides of the discussion on the 40 km speed limit.
Again, thank you for contacting our office.

I bet they end up going 40 everywhere inside neighbourhoods, including on collectors.

Boston did this.
Interesting from a driver behavior and limiting impact standpoint it appears to have worked. 85 percentile speed remained the same so most people still drove the same speed yet it had a significant reduction in top speed.
https://www.iihs.org/iihs/news/desktopnews/city-drivers-slow-down-for-lower-speed-limit-in-boston
No info on harm reduction though.
