Are they going the pedestal/seatbelt route with the mid 90's jersey? I would be shocked (but pretty excited) as 99% of fans dread that jersey. That is the only jersey that I can think of that was "orangey-red". Then again, the Flames organization never really gives the fans what they want...

I believe the story is that there was going to be a maple leaf and the Alberta shield on each shoulder, but they were told that they need to be full flags.
Connecting the dots, the flag change came too late for a re-design and the Flames had to submit their design with the full flags.

Heritage, tradition, history.
Maybe include Calgary flag as well.

^Needs more flags.
Anyways what a dumb decision by the Flames to wait until a week after China to release a red and yellow jersey.

If true, what a total miss by Ken King and company. That's just awful.

To be able to play exhibition games in a newly available jersey?
The Flames would prefer to have a bigger debut for their jersey than a midnight exhibition game.
The China trip is an NHL event meant to promote the league in general, and, my guess is the merchandising crew from the NHL has a bunch of merchandise for all the teams packed away in their trunk, ready for sale. Outside of maybe a few extra Bruins and Flames pieces, it's not the Fan Attic getting set up over there in those two arenas...basicslly a new jersey would not get any significant incremental interest.
And talk about an over simplification of the demographic; you're saying fans in China will buy something simply just because it's red and yellow like the flag? Nevermind the Flames jersey is red and yellow currently, with some black, but I think you have to give fans a bit more credit than that.

Whose to say they don't bust out retros for one of the China games and throw them on sale everywhere that day?
Or not.

If they were going to wear the red gear in China, they would have been practicing in it over the last couple of days to break it in.

Oh don't worry, I don't think anyone here was anticipating that the Flames jumped on a lobbed up softball, marketing opportunity.

Because you know that not putting the UN flag on there too is just lazy design...

The red and yellow jerseys are still a marketing opportunity and something the fans there can easily remember should they ever decide to follow hockey online. You'd be surprised what people attach themselves to when they aren't represented in something.
Obviously not the same because the rockets had yao Ming but they have a massive following in China now.

The Canucks and Kings wore both sets of uniforms in their China games last year.

You're right.
Colour me surprised -- that means not only two sets of jerseys but also two sets of helmets and socks as well. Seems excessive to me but if they're sparing no expense then why the heck not...

Lol they packed a hair dryer that won't work in China.

So... classic style retro-esque but in orangey pedestal-era red sans black.
Hmm...
