I would be curious to see what the "renovation budgets" are. A $200M renovation budget for ththe saddle dome, a $200M renovation budget for McMahon and a $200M renovation budget would for instance put CalgaryNEXT back in the discussion without actually announcing that mid negotiation.

*Note- this is not meant to say the "CalgaryNEXT" project will or should go ahead, but instead that funding together with CSEC money could result in new equivalent facilities. The bonus being that the city portion of the new facilities would be cost split between the provincial, federal governments and the IOC.

I just wish we had a nice stadium like Regina, SK and a nice arena like the rest of the NHL.

Wonder how much they have earmarked to renovate the dome and mcmahon. For me leaving an infrastructure and stadium legacy are the two biggest draws, without them, why bother... just to host the party?

Also, hosting the olympics and outsourcing your downhill events to a venue 15 hours drive away is a joke when you have a ski hill on the world cup tour an hour out of town in province. Send the bobsled and ski jumping there because no one cares that much anyway.

Also, a new arena costs anywhere bewteen $300M and $500M. T-Mobile arena, the newest arena in the NHL, was build for $375M.

Anything more than that likely includes other infrastructure such as entertainment venues, other sports stadia, practice facilities, parking and landscaped gathering places.

Default Updated cost for Calgary to host the 2026 Olympic to be $5.23 billion.

Huge no if it means dumping millions into renovating McMahon and the dome. Might as well set that money on fire.

the costs to the Dome are probably just to keep it alive till then and then usable one last time before they blow it up

It's just ski-jumping and nordic combined in Whistler, not downhill

Why would only new facilities be a "infrastructure and stadium legacy"? I mean surely any renos they do would be done with an eye towards extending the usable life span of the existing facilities.

Haha $5.23 billion and that doesn't even include a new arena? Is this serious?

What an absolute embarrassing waste of time and money.

Just no to renovating Mcmahon. Its an old building and to renovate it to modern standards would be costly and stupid.

First question (Jones): How much of the money in this budget will we have to spend just to keep the existing venues functional whether we host the Olympics or not?

Answer: 80-90% of the capital budget in the proposal will need to be spent regardless of the Olympics or not.
