Serena may be the best women player of all time but she is an effing dbag. Glad she lost that way. I'm jsut surprised she wasn't going to threaten to kill the ump and shove the ball up his ass.

Lol. When guys do it,it’s playing with emotion, when Serena does it she’s a bitch and deserves to lose.
Your always the first person on this board to slam athletes. I’d like to know your Grand Slam records and all the trophies you won to keep sh**ting on every athlete ever.

I'd say pulling the 'as a mother' card was more worthy of the third warning than calling the umpire a thief, but it was an eye rolling display all around that only got worse as it got to the trophy presentation (and tennis is a sport that has some pretty cringe-inducing trophy presentations at the best of times. Let the loser get off the court for crying out loud).
Tennis as a whole needs to sort some stuff out.

One thing I don’t get here is the “Women vs Men” double standard...this has never happened really in a big match for men or women.
If anything this one feels like either an overly sensitive judge or a judge holding a grudge being the reason for her getting penalized the game - don’t think it was just because she was a women.
Regardless of whether the ump was right or wrong Serena embarrassed herself. I also thought it was pretty scummy the way she brought her daughter into it, women’s rights and sexism. And to hear her pat herself on the back for standing up for women? Ugh. Get a grip.
She was equaled only in the shameful display from the crowd. Made worse by Serena further patting herself on the back for waiting until after the booing to say something. Good job. Let them boot the poor girl for five minutes and once you feel vindicated and she’s bawling her eyes out, then asking he crowd to stop.
Ugly all around. Not something you like to see. Feel bad for Osaka. She didn’t deserve that.

What are you talking about? John McEnroe is a joke for being known for doing this.

Sleeping on what happened and it's even more infuriating.
20 years old. Won the match soundly. Her first ever Slam and she didn't even get to truly celebrate the way she deserved. Anyone with an ounce of empathy would've wrapped that girl up in a hug or arm around her shoulder during that entire trophy "ceremony".
That pathetic display yesterday brings such a black mark to what was supposed to be a wonderful moment for this young lady and her family. How she said her parents sacrificed so much for her. The Osakas didn't get to embrace that moment. Shame on everyone.
After being hard on ESPN, and I still think it was deserved, I'm glad Naomi got some well-earned loved from the women in the panel and the crowd outside of the stadium post-match. Still doesn't change what happened inside of Ashe, though.
She's one of the brightest spots of the women's game right now. I hope the next Slam she wins will be an awesome celebration.

The US Open sure brings out the Serena meltdowns. I just can't believe she was trying to convince everyone that the blatant coaching we saw wasn't blatant coaching. Yes, like other selectively enforced rules it's one of those things that happens a lot and doesn't get called, but it's also not always as blatant as it was yesterday. Perhaps the game penalty was a bit harsh, but you could also tell Serena wasn't letting it go until she totally melted down, so she probably would have earned it eventually anyway.
But mostly you feel for Osaka, the women's game desperately needs younger players to step up, she steps up, and her moment is totally ruined. The US Open crowd has been a disgrace for years going back to their treatment of Novak in the Federer matches, so no shocker they disgraced themselves again.

Here is Roger Federer arguing with the referee earlier this year - interestingly, accusing him of stealing Roger's challenge, much as Serena accused Ramos of stealing a point.
See any difference in the way they handled it?

She reminded me of Donald Trump in terms of the level of self-congratulatory delusion. Just a complete embarrassment of a human being. Of course the umpire was wrong, but to carry on like a petulant child about it and ruin a final - and particularly to wreck such a huge moment for Osaka - is just the sort of egotism you might be able to forgive if she were a 21 year old.

No point in repeating how ridiculous and classless Williams was but the worst to me is how she managed to make the final all about her barely giving any credit to her opponent who was clearly the better player. Never gracious in defeat as here comments at the ceremonies that "she played good" is insulting as she was by far the better player and Osaka deserved better than this.

This, incidentally, is a pretty good interview considering I've never heard Osaka talk before. Not sure how you couldn't like this girl.

That is the most stereotypically Japanese answer I think I've ever heard.

Let's hope for a drama free Men's final, I imagine the crowd is going to be very pro Del Potro and that might actually help Novak as he always gets fired up. I'm predicting Delpo in 5.
Novak has a bad 2-4 record in US Open finals considering he's one of the greatest hard court players ever it's very surprising. However if Novak wins he will tie Pete Sampras with 14 grand slams and will most likely finish the year#1.
It was coaching, and lots of coaching goes on but it was clear and went on for more than a second. It was pretty telling when the woman behind the coach is tapping him on the shoulder to stop. I’m assuming she’s looking at the umpire and sees he’s looking at the box.
Point penalty for the racquet, yep.
The game penalty was harsh. She went off on him and wouldn’t stop but as the cheerleaders said after perhaps he should have said that was enough and anything more would be a penalty. If she kept going, which she may have, then it’s more justified. She did keep attacking him and eventually broke him.
She’s right there were worse outbursts on umpires, most of the memorable ones are pretty ancient history in the Connors McEnroe era. I think Pospisil/Sock have had some good ones and Andy Murray too.

I'm not positive if you are asking this question rhetorically or not, but the Federer clip certainly was a bit more civilized. I'm sure there are other examples of men screaming at the umps and not being penalized, but specifically in this clip, at no point did I feel like he was acting on the verge of getting penalized. In the Williams clip, as I was watching I was anxious that she was pushing the line too far and was only mildly surprised when the penalty was called. She invoked a variety of angles, with varying degrees of validity. Demanding an apology, stating that she's a mother and a woman, the US Open is always an adventure for her, calling him a thief, etc. Name calling ('thief') versus declaring actions ('stole') are different.
Certainly, context of a match penalty vs. warning are also very different, but the players did approach the situations differently. Ultimately, it's a situation that I expect would rattle a rookie, but shouldn't have caused a veteran star athlete to lose it in-game.
