Yeah 2 years is soooo long ago in retrospect...
I think what speaks volumes is the NFL outproduced the CFL, while the CFL was in the playoffs and the NFL was in regular season. Volumes spoken

Superbowl and Grey Cup this past year both had similar ratings, and that doesn't include the amount of Canadians who watched it on American TV channels due to the new CRTC rules. Under the old rules, the Superbowl had been consistently outdrawing the Grey Cup.
I wouldn't put a lot of stock into the CTV/TSN ratings for morning and afternoon games because there are so many games going on that same time. I'd be interested in seeing how the NFL's primetime games stack up ratings-wise vs. the CFL's but I can't for the life of me find a site with that info that isn't infuriating to use.

No point even looking. Ever since they laid off that guy from yahoo sports there is nothing. He even had numbers for Flames and Oilers regional games.

2 years ago Obama was still president.
Hey look! Stats from last year that prove you wrong.
There is no way Sunday night or late Sunday afternoon NFL can draw 1.4 and 1.5 million in Canada.
Quote:
The Eastern and Western Finals delivered strong results in the Toronto/GTA market, with viewing of both games more than doubling (+115%) compared to last year. In Calgary, audiences for both games also grew 31% vs last year, with the Eastern and Western Finals ranking as the #1 and #2 programs of the day in the Calgary market.
The Eastern Final, featuring Saskatchewan at Toronto attracted an average audience of 1.5 million as the Argos secured a win with a last-minute touchdown drive, leading to a 25-21 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In the Western Final, an average audience of 1.4 million viewers watched as Calgary withstood a valiant fourth-quarter rally from Edmonton to claim a 32-28 victory.

The cfl has the advantage that most NFL games air in only two time slots, splitting viewership between games. While CFL games never air in competition with each other.
Nevertheless it is crazy for anyone to suggest cfl ratings are anything other than excellent. Comparing the grey cup and the Super Bowl ratings isn’t really fair either, they are hardly even comparable in terms of their cultural impact. Tons of people will watch the Super Bowl solely for the commercials and half time show. It’s like comparing the Genies (lol I can’t believe that’s what we called our film awards) to the Oscars.
I’d say it is a massive win for the cfl to even compare their ratings to the nfl. They are by every conceivable definition a second tier league compared to the nfl (at least in terms of objective comparisons, when it comes to entertainment there’s obviously a big debate). The fact a small time Canadian domestic league with the entire leagues payrolls and revenues dwarfed by the salaries for individual players in the nfl is a clear sign they aren’t on an even playing field.
Could you honestly imagine if Corner Gas (or whatever the hell Canadian produced tv shows people watch nowadays) was pulling in the same ratings as Friends (or whatever the hell US produced network shows people watch nowadays)? I’d be willing to bet US produced TV shows absolutely trounce all Canadian shows in the ratings in Canada and have for at least three decades. With the level of integration of the entertainment markets in Canada and the US, anything Canadian that comes close to their American counterparts is astounding. To say it’s telling that CFL playoffs are only comparable to a regular season NFL game is completely missing the bigger picture.

CFL is older than the NFL and a lot of it's rules were in place prior to the NFL. I think you like many are simply conditioned to the NFL's rules more.

I think I calculated last year that the NCAA players that come to the CFL are still in the top 85th percentile of NCAA players.

Well you're looking at about 250 FCS and FBS football teams with 80-100 players per team. That's like 3000 players looking for pretty limited slots.

I thought I'd read that CFL attendance had seen a steady decline over the last few years and they're having issues bringing in younger fans. Is this true?

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. CFL viewership isn't going to affect my ability to watch NFL games. Just kind of odd that a CFL fan came in here to troll the NFL fans. You don't generally see that in the CFL thread, do you? That's why I kind of brought up the inferiority complex. I find the same thing happens when I'm out in public, too. I'll be talking NFL with a buddy and some clown from Regina will start taking shots at it.

Funny, as a CFL fan first who doesn't mind the NFL, I've always noticed the opposite. Can't talk CFL with friends or coworkers without the one dbag hardcore poser NFL fan who couldn't find Kansas City on a map bragging about how he's a diehard Chiefs fan and the CFL is second rate.
But I think that's mostly to do with perception. I'd also say that in general, most people I know don't give a crap and don't really pay attention to the guys who need to justify their love for a sport by crapping on another league. Almost every football fan I know likes both leagues. CFL/NFL and MLS/any euro soccer just seem to be the most common sources of fans who hate one league for some reason.
As for attendance, it is definitely an issue in the CFL's biggest markets. Vancouver/Calgary/Toronto have been struggling. Montreal will always be fairweather fans. They'll be fine when the team is good again.
Not sure how the NFL is doing attendance wise but their TV ratings have definitely been making headlines the last few seasons for the declines, where the CFL has maintained strong numbers.

They were down last year I believe. The NFL has done a truly marvelous job at alienating its fans through a combination of gouging its fans, dbag owners holding cities ransom for new stadiums, and trying to squeeze the life out of the game by making overly complicated rules (i.e. the catch rule) and trying to stifle the players' creativity and individuality.
They're still the biggest juggernaut in pro sports but I do believe there are cracks in the foundation. One of the more notable signs of this is that I believe the NBA has surpassed it as the sport of choice for the 18-49 demographic and both MLS and MLB have been gaining on it. I think in 10 years or so it may be held up as a prime example of how pigs get fat but hogs get slaughtered.

Why the eff are we talking about the CFL in the NFL thread?
Why don't we compare the Premier league to MLS while we're at it?

I have NFL network as part of my Shaw package this year. I was hoping that NFL Game Day Live was going to be as good as Redzone but it is absolute garbage.

If you have Shaw Bluesky they appear to have all the games on the Shaw Sports channels (642 to 649.) I hope it is like this every week.

It's been a while, I forgot how frustrating it can be going into a season when your team actually has high expectations..looking like the classic, completely terrible Saints D out there right now. They can't stop anything
