I know 99.75% don't care - but Yankees bring back Pettitte with a 1 year 16 million dollar deal with a player option

In the same vain of news people wont care about...Bonds re-signed with the Giants, terms being the exact same as Pettitte's deal.

Forgive me for not following Pettite's career after he left NY, but is he still worth $16 million.

If Meche and Lilly are worth $11 each...I would say he is, all depends if he can avoid injuries, as he has been plagued by them of late.

This Pettite signing might not be a bad thing for the AL East.

Here are some notable career numbers against Pettite from Toronto and Boston (stolen from the Jays board)

Thomas .359/.500/1.141 in 39AB and 3HR
Glaus .323/.432/1.174 in 31AB and 3HR
Clayton .385/.433/.856 in 26AB
Wells .500/.545/1.395 in 20AB with 1HR
the entire jays as a team combined .340/.434/1.005

For Boston:
Manny .424/.470/1.165 in 59AB and 3HR
Varitek .361/.400/.844 in 36AB
Ortiz .409/.458/1.140 in 22AB and 1HR
Drew .375/.444/1.694 in 8AB and 2HR
Team stats of .377/.420/1.018

Wow...very interesting, I never would have guessed that.

No Jays prospects on the list...no real surprise though.

Yikes, the Angels have 2 SS prospects in the top 50, Wood and Aybar. Sure would be nice if a deal could be made for one on those 2 players, even if it doesn't help the Jays this year.

Perfect pitcher for the Cubs it seems, as he seems to take on the same identity as the Cubs...decent first half of the year, enough to give fans of the team hope that they have the real thing...and then fall apart in the second half when the heat is on.

Damn it I have to go see if I can get my 86MPH fastball back and work a curveball into my repitoire, and a change up. It may not be too late to become a millionaire yet.

Well Sylvan, by the looks of it you could get an ~ 10 million/year deal...if you are a lefty, jack that up to Pettite numbers!

So no Jays...it really didn't make sense, anyways - 8 mill for a setup guy in Toronto? Let alone what that would have done to BJ Ryan.

Gagne and his agent Scott Boras were reportedly considering offers from the Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox.

Anyways, on to other random going ons in baseball free agency...

Looks like the Mariner's signed ex-Jay Miguel Batista for 3 years, 24 MILLION!!!! Deal. Batistata is 35 years old....ouch. Over 7 million at 38-39. Ouch.
http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/news_story/?ID=188139&hubname=mlb

The Orioles signed Jay Payton
http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/news_story/?ID=188088&hubname=mlb

Lofton and the Rangers look close on a deal
http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/news_story/?ID=188036&hubname=mlb
from one old guy (Mathews to another one they go)

and the Angels signed Darren Oliver, ex of the Mets for 1-year 1.75 mill.
http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/news_story/?ID=188102&hubname=mlb

Ouch. I am still saying that for Seattle...what is Bavasi doing there? Not so much maybe in getting Batista, but for that long and for that much money?!

This is disturbing.

JP has floating an offer to Wells of 7 years, 126 million.

18 million a year. This is insane. Absolutely insane.

Astros get Jennings from the Rockies.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2695473

Could be a good deal for the Rockies if those 2 young pitchers develop.

It's certainly insane, but it's still $3M cheaper than he'd get on the open market IMO. If he'd bite to that, I'd keep him for a couple seasons, then deal him for pitching to look like the deal was done in good faith. IMO, almost no player is worth more than $15M, unless their an Ace. The market is getting better for Wells, and he knows it.

That's what the market would bare for a player of VW's calibre.

I really think you will just object to anything JP does. He can sign Jesus himself to a 5 million dollar deal and you wouldn't like it (though admitedly Jesus doesn't hit lefties well at all).

Jiri, give me a break with those type of crap comments.

JP couldn't make this move even if he wanted to, this is pretty much an upper management and ownership decision.

If you really want me to, I could go over a list of goals and objectives I would like to see done which would make me approve, and if JP does any of them, I would praise him.

What exactly has Vernon Wells done to get such money? He hits 30 Homers, not exactly a dime a dozen, but its common enough, not to warrent 18 million. If we are paying him the CF premium, than I suggest we stop. We have 2 capable CFs manning our corners (Johnson and Rios), who could move to CF, Rios for example has gold glove calibre defense.
