I don’t think I’d sign anyone right now. Having the cap space is valuable and we should see what the kids can do.

We have the depth to not need to sign anyone right now. Theres enough competition as it is. Save the cap space in case we need to trade up for a No1 goalie for when Smith gets hurt.

Hmm, who will be Calgary's Douglas Murray, Nicklas Grossmann, Tanner Glass, or Matt Bartkowski this season...
Johnny Oduya?

I'd be awesome if Brad Treliving could trade Oliver Kylington or Rasmus Andersson plus a couple 1st's to the Leafs for William Nylander.
One of Frolik or Stone could also be dealt to clear the needed cap space.
7 x $6.75 for the RFA Nylander

You don't trade your current top defensive prospect AND two firsts for a second line winger.
Yes, I guess it would be awesome. From a Leafs' point of view.

Pretty sure whatever he signed for would be buried entirely in the AHL, not counting against the cap or even increasing our cap space if he's replacing a more expensive player on the main roster.

Viktor Svedberg (D) is an interesting one to consider. He hasn't been able to crack the Blackhawks in the past 2 seasons, although he was injured for a long time in 2016-2017. He played 27 NHL games in 2015-2016. He had a pretty solid season last year in the AHL.
He is huge. 6' 8" and 240 lbs. I could see Treliving giving a guy like that a PTO and maybe an AHL contract to start.

I agree it’s a bad trade, but with all due respect to those guys they aren’t the top defensive prospect in the system.

True, the majority on this forum rated Valimaki higher, but many in the sports media still have Andersson rated higher. He is certainly more NHL-ready, so I guess it depends on how you compare prospects with respect to potential ceiling vs. NHL readiness.

I've never read a single piece that rated Valimaki lower than Andersson. As for NHL readiness, Andersson should be closer, since he's had pro experience and a few games. But Valimaki looked more ready last camp.

Here's one from sportingnews.com that doesn't even mention Valimaki, referring to Andersson as the only legit prospect left in the system after Fox was traded (not that I agree with that assessment).
This article on flamesnation polled eight of their writers, two of whom rated Andersson as the top prospect, and overall only one point separated Andersson and Valimaki.
And Pronman, of course, rated Kylington as the Flames' top D prospect.
But absolutely, most seem to agree (including myself) that Valimaki has a higher ceiling and may see some action this year. In fairness, though, I thought I had seen more articles that proclaimed Andersson as the Flames' top prospect, but it appears that I was mistaken.

Kristen Anderson tweeting the Flames night sign Brendan Smith to a PTO. Now that’s a PTO! I think he might actually make the team as one of the team’s starting 6 defencemen.
