I spoke to Ken King 16 months ago before our latest Adidas jerseys were revealed and he told me what they would look like and told me that this year we were bringing the retros back and that he is aware that people want the retro look (red and white) full time but ownership does not. So who knows for sure but we could get the red retro this year and then switch to them full time in a couple of years

Lol, it's so funny to me how team ownership treats merchandise and branding.
Your branding and merch IS your business, this isn't Apple fans cheering for new company shirts. If the fans are telling you this is what they want... make it. It's the easiest decision you can make.
You're not going to draw in new fans with your branding and jersey, you do that with the on-ice product. Merch buyers are a part of your revenue stream already... appeal to them! I understand once or twice dipping your toes into the water of new directions, but that's what 3rd jerseys are for.
The ink has run dry from circling what jersey we want your team to wear for us and what clothing we would like to purchase from you. When you put it out, we all sprint to your nearest money-making location and give you money. The jerseys cost us the same, the decision is just as easy one way or the other for you... let's agree to make eachother happy when I try and cheer for your team.

I just have a feeling that our ownership is the type that's going to be like "Fine, if you want retro colours, you can have them, but we're going to do something else terrible to them so you hate the jerseys. That'll learn ya."

Shocking. Rich old guy confirms that a bunch of richer old guys should leave these decisions to someone else. Anyone else.
No they didn't. I checked all the home openers dating back to 2006.
They often wore their retro 3rds though.
IIRC they wore them in the preseaon at home once a few years ago, and the last time I can recall in the regular season was the game against the Avs back when Conroy was on the team (I think he was honoured that game for something)...
A few years ago, the Canucks had a white retro jersey they wore at home a few times. When the Leafs came west that year, they only brought their blue uniforms, so all the home teams wore white against the Leafs on that trip. I think that happened a couple of times that season where the Flames ended up wearing white at home.

I had a feeling this was the problem and you can't really blame them for sticking to their personal preferences (it's their money and I'd do the same thing).
On the other hand, I kind of view it like if you're willfully leaving money on the table that's your call but don't come to ask taxpayers for a bailout on your business then (arena). Selling 200k jerseys at avg price of $200 is $40MM. That helps with an arena doesn't it? I haven't bought a jersey in like 8 years and won't until they produce one that doesn't make my eyes bleed. Since the jersey I bought is a retro, there's no real need to get another.
Also as an aside, maybe the fact that the owners are generally over 70 is part of the problem in terms of recognizing any sort of style.

You can’t be serious in thinking they’d sell 200,000 new jerseys??? I think that’s about 10x too aggressive...
