The team is travelling to China with most of the main roster but they still have a few preseason games scheduled in North America at the same time and need players to play in those games. Also, I think there's still a couple of spots to fill in Stockton.

Other teams on Panarin's preferred list are the Islanders, Kings, Lightning, Panthers, and Stars.
Hmmm wonder why the Rags? By my estimation they're just starting a turn-over. Going to be a few years before they're competitive again, and that's if they can replace 'The King' in net.

Seems to confirm the rumour that he wanted to play in a big US city.
Tampa's not the flashiest city around, but the weather's nice in the winter and they've got one of the best chances to win it all over the next few seasons.

Just for the city?
Maybe not just the city, but I would say primarily because the Rangers play in Manhattan.

I dont think the Rangers are that far away from rising again. Theyve done a good job stocking up on good young players who will likely be getting up to full speed by the time Panarin would play for them. Itd be a good fit IMO.

Besides the China games logistics, there are some battles where a PTO makes sense in terms of the Flames roster (IMO).
1. Potential 6/7 guy that bumps down Kulak or Prout on the depth chart if one of the young guys don't step up in camp. Remember after the initial free agent frenzy Treliving said he was looking to improve depth on defence. He hasn't yet.
2. 12/13/14 forward that they think is an upgrade on Hathaway/Peluso/Rychel/Lomberg/etc. Flames need a gritty/physical/pugilistic forward that can play reguarly in their bottom 6 especially with the departure of Ferland.
3. backup goalie. Depends on how much trust they have in Rittich/Gillies. Personally I would give Rittich and Gillies the full training camp and if they look shaky then look at what is left.

Move evidence that the current Stanley Cup odds of the team isn't nearly as big a factor in player preferences as a lot of fans want to believe. Like the rest of us, these guys care about the climate, culture, entertainment, family, etc. when they're looking at where they want to live and work.

If they take Smith, Rittich, and Gillies to China, I wonder if one of the PTOs might be a goalie? Lehtonen, Mason, and Pavelec are all unsigned right now. Jeff Glass is also unsigned and he's a local guy.

There was talk on the radio yesterday morning of taking a guy like Schneider to China (I think they said him) and leaving one of the expected backups here to play. The idea being that the 3rd goalie isn't going to see any ice at all unless there was an injury.

Lehtonen last year had 37 starts, 15-14 record and a .912. One year one million for him would be ideal after he earned it off a PTO. Sets a bar for Rittich and Gillies to hurdle over to earn the back up spot. I'd do it. If he can give 30-37 starts and put up an over .500 record the Flames would be in great shape.

There's an argument to be made for having Rittich and Gillies split time here in North America along with the prospects, to decide who wins the backup role. It would be easy to send some PTO schlub like Mason off to China where he probably just munches popcorn.
