If Hanafin signs first to a good deal, then Oilers would try to get a discount for Nurse.

Thoughts?
Chia is going to stick it to Calgary by paying Nurse more to prove he is more valuable.

Also by paying Nurse more they "prove" he's better, and that their young core is better because they cost more. I have a suspicious feeling he partially thinks that way.

There is no way the Oilers can parlay this into a deal for themselves, after all, they suck.

I will be in the minority here, but I would have preferred a bridge. Hanafin barely cracked the top 4 last season (based on ice time, zone starts, and competition.) His point production was decent but not spectacular. In short he still has a lot to prove.

I like the player, and he has been progressing every season. Chances are this is a budget contract down the road. But paying relatively unproven players a bunch of money has been the Oilers recipe for "success".

I think a 2 year prove it deal would have been the safer contract that left some incentive on the board. Plus, the next contract would have bought more UFA years if things turned out.

So all in all we spend just a tick more for Hanifin and Lindholm for 6 years.

dougie and Ferland: 7.5m total cap hit

Hanifin and Lindholm: 9.8 m total cap hit

2.3 m difference. Not too shabby.

^ it is a worthwhile risk though. IF you bridge him for two years and he becomes a top pairing dman all of a sudden he costs you 7+ Million in year three. Look at when Montreal gave Subban a bridge deal. It cost them way more in the long run.

Hanfin is now the 54th highest paid dman in the league. That means that even if tops out as a second pairing guy it is not far what those guys make.

How much in 3 years though when both of them are done with their current contracts.

Exactly. Ferland may very well be closer to that 4m mark next season.

I don't even think it's that great value (relative to the market - young defensemen on long term speculative deals may be undervalued as group), it's just that some of you expected AAVs that were too high to begin with.

I'm pretty happy with this. I was kind of expecting 7 years at 6+ so this is fine by me. Leaves the team a little wiggle room, perhaps an add-on at the trade deadline. Nice work by BT.

He is 21 years old.

So....yeah.

In the "olden days" Dmen were often prevented from playing until 24 or 25 (with obvious exceptions), and that's because the position is simply the hardest to learn and excel at when talking about the NHL level.

This kid is on a really good track as far as development.

This deal has the potential to pay off in a HUGE way in a couple years.

late to the party but happy to raise a toast: Excellent Deal by BT!

not a steal, but definitely not overpaid... it's right in the lower end of the market imo...

very pleased and can't wait to see the team in action!

Great Deal!

Now,

Trade Stone for a pick... trade Gillies for a legitimate back up (or bank on signing Lehtonen if Smith goes down) and I will be completely satisfied with the off-season. Oh, also Ken King leaving would be nice

I think this is a great deal. That being said the flames are loaded with long term contracts that are banking on future improvements to this core (Tkachuk next year). If two or three of these deals don't blow up on our faces it could be a really tough 3 or 4 years. I'm hopeful though.
