Really? Because the countless pubs and brewery's that allow kids says otherwise.

I do not agree with the OP on this at all. The ontario government officially rolling out their "buck a beer" initiative is a complete rebuttal to the premise (although, leave it to the genius doug ford to put forth such a ludicrous priority item early in his term!)..

The elimination of minimum volumes of production which allow craft beer and spirits to be expanded would be the big one.

In other provinces which provincially controlled liquor stores the expansion to allow more offsale at later times and to allow grocery chains to sell beer and liquor. In BC you can now buy wine and beer in the grocery store itself.

Your local pub is likely restricted from having minors becuase of VLTs or by choice rather than their liquor permit as pubs can get licenses that permit minors.

Alcohol and Marijuana have short term physical effects which people greatly enjoy, that outweigh the perceived long term effects in our minds.

Tobacco - in all its forms, does not get you inebriated. So its consumption was naturally going to go the wayside as its long term effects outweigh the short term effects.

Not only will booze and weed stick around socially, shrooms are next. Give it 20 years.

This pretty much sums it up, for me. This is so much more the case than it was thirty or forty years ago when the backlash against tobacco was taking place. Frankly, if it'd happened now, I'm not sure there would have been nearly as much success.

Obviously the scientific consensus for alcohol being universally terrible for you with no redeeming characteristics is not there in the same way as it was for smoking... but it sure as hell is for climate change and vaccines, and there are still plenty of holdouts on those topics, thanks largely to this brave new world in which we're all able to simply choose our own facts and reality and ignore everything that doesn't support what we already think.

All pubs in the NWT are restricted because of draconian liquor laws. At the brewpub in Yellowknife, the owner can have their baby in the industrial brewery area, but not in the pub during the day. It's a joke. I was unaware that other Provinces were loosening the rules. Can you have a beer in the park yet?

Sorry I assumed you were in Alberta. In Calgary I drink beer and wine in the park and have never been bothered though it’s not legal.

Had a ball tourney on the weekend where everyone was drinking and some cops came by. No issues at all.

Can we change the title to: "Another CliffFletcher hot take: Drinking to go the way of smoking." Or at least "Opinion: Drinking to go the way of smoking."

Life is deadly, 100% mortality rate in fact!
Knowing this, I'll keep writing beer recipes, brewing, having people over, and consuming myself.

best way to cut down on your drinking is to have kids.

was pretty easy for me to put the bottle down thinking a hangover would suck at 5 or 6:00am when your kid gets you up. especially if you're the primary caregiver. (for me I also didn't want the guilt of not being able to fully interact with my kid because of alcohol)

plus I'd rather spend the money on items needed for my home/kids rather than booze.

Ugh...then you deal with kids and realize that drinking is the only thing that will see you through.

Just wait until your kids are old enough to drink. Its a nightmare.

Staying up until 3am with some 18 year olds and their friends who think they've got it all figured out after they're hammered off of 3 beers and a Mike's Hard Lemonade.

They are in for a world of hurt.

The reason that drinking won't go the way of smoking is that there was no financial incentive for establishments to allow smoking. Some patrons liked smoking, while it drove others away. But the financial gain from cigarettes largely went to different businesses that were actually selling cigarettes, not the ones where people were smoking.

Alcohol works on a totally different model, where the establishments that determine their own liquor policies are the same ones that see the profit. Whether this is a ball park, a festival, a cafe or a bar, serving alcohol (while, obviously, banning outside alcohol) carries a huge financial incentive.
