Yeah, it could be that....

More likely its just not a place conducive to her lifestyle. The same reason players dont want to go to Edmonton.

I mean, Omsk is literally in Siberia.

They are playing out of Moscow this season though.

Versteeg's wife has a good head on her shoulders.

Nobody who has any other options wants to live in a mobbed up Petro state/fascist dictatorship.

That linked story explicitly says his wife forbade him from moving to Russia.

The owner of the team offered to fly him out on his private jet and he offered his wife a Bentley to use while there.

Oh yeah. Nothing says 'low-key' and 'don't rob me' like a Bentley.

Must be heartbreaking for Versteeg right now.

Career looks to be at an end when his age and talent would suggest he's still a useful and productive player.

Why do players not opt for the Swedish, finnish or swiss leagues as alternatives post-nhl?

Are those leagues more restrictive for expat players, are salaries much lower, etc?

Versteeg likely can't be insured due to his injury history which makes him unattractive to teams with verifiable financials.

KHL is willing to take a flyer because the cash is worthless and the league is rigged.

I've talked to at least a dozen people who went to the world cup in Russia and rave about the country. I'd try playing hockey there for a year knowing I have millions in the bank back home to fall back on. It would be a neat experience IMO.

Russian media report that move is cancelled. The report indicates, that the reason is Versteeg's questionable durability and health issues. It also explicitly states that the story about Versteeg's wife blocking the move is false. The final straw, according to the article, was when Kari Ramo went down for next half a season, and Omsk decided they should not invest in an injury prone Versteeg.

Police is pretty good and judicial system is quite effective. As long, as Putin and co are not involved, that is. Also, at least in Moscow, we have a phone in a police room, and a sign that reads "if the police is not opening the case for your complains, feel free to call this number". The reason for low crime numbers, in my opinion, is that Russia have far less homeless people, than western world, including Canada. For example, we have a lot of underground pedestrian tunnels and they are not becoming homeless men's nests. I remember I have read here in off topic section that you had to close an underground tunnel in Calgary under MacLeod's Trail because of it. Another factor, at least in Moscow, is population density. Unless you walk out at 2AM, there are always people near you. And we don't have detached houses in Moscow, we live in hi rises mostly. Much harder to break in. This all contributes to a pretty safe environment.

Yup. Google "Russia dashboard cam videos". It's fricken crazy... Tanks jumping the hiway in front of incoming traffic, people firing shot at cars that cut them off. No thanks.

We all get to believe what we want to believe, but homeless people don't account for the numbers you suggest. Enjoy Russia all you want, but the idea Canada is twice as unsafe as any other country on Earth is far fetched. I lived in two the safest country on Earth, and there's zero material difference in the lifestyles of those living there and in Canada. Canada is often listed as one of the top 10 safest countries in earth.

I hope he gets a PTO with the Oilers, and then goes to another team the day before the season opener.
