Icon28 Zetterberg could miss the entire season

https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/1592059

Quote:
It doesn't seem likely that Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg will be "ready to play," and he would likely miss the entire season in that case, head coach Jeff Blashill said, according to MLive's Ansar Khan.

The veteran center hasn't trained much this summer because of his back issues, and Blashill said it would be all but impossible for Zetterberg to play this season without proper offseason preperations, according to The Athletic's Craig Custance.

Zetterberg still has three years remaining on his contract with an average annual value of $6.083 million.

Sounds like he might have the same bout of "bad cap hit-itis" that Hossa got last year.

How convenient that this coincides with his salary dropping from $7 million to $3.35 and then down to $1 million next year.

Over/under on how long it takes his contract to be shipped off to Arizona?

Actually it sounds like he has an ongoing back problem that has prevented him from training.

Right but to go from "He won't be ready to go opening night... actually he's going to miss the whole season" in the same sentence is a pretty big jump...

Difference is wings dont need the cap room and probably want a healthy Zetterberg in the lineup.

https://www.capfriendly.com/

The Red Wings have the highest cap hit in the league and literally $0 in space. Losing their second highest cap hit to LTIR for this year would be a huge benefit to them.

If Zetterberg were the only player to LTIRetire as soon as his salary dropped, then whatever. But how many is this now? It's cap circumvention and it's garbage that the league lets them away with it.

Back was okay when he was making $7 million. Now he's making half that salary his back condition is now chronic. Where have we heard this before? In other words he's retiring (unofficially) as there's no way he comes back to play next season for $1 million. Such an embarrassment for the league how big market teams have been allowed to circumvent the salary cap.

The only embarrassment should be the people who over react and create conspiracy theories about cap circumvention and fake injuries when aging players have injuries.

But what I think he is getting at is the fact that these contracts are set up, and then dissolve like nothing, barely make news, and a team just gets an easy out on a contract.

Regardless of the fact of Zetterberg actually being injured, it is the fact these teams can just basically absolve a contract and not be under ANY spotlight.

I don't think it's a "conspiracy", but it is quite interesting people choose not to question it... that's all.

The Hossa issue was a made into a big deal and the NHL got involved. I'm sure if fans are questioning things like this, so are people in team offices.

I’m not even sure why anyone would get upset over this. Real issue or a conspiracy, the result is the same for all parties involved, and the standard continues for the rest of the league.

Questioning it is one thing. I came into the thread thinking “oh no this is terrible, I hope he can recover soon”, but then it’s cap circumvention talk right outta the gate. It’s getting ridiculous.

Agreed

Zetterberg was 2nd in team scoring last season and an outstanding leader. im sure there would even be appetite from other teams to trade for him for his last season if he was healthy.

Head in sand. Nobody is saying it's a fake injury. Maybe Hossa had a nagging skin injury and maybe Zetterberg has reoccurring back pains as a lot of players do. The issue is that the conditions conveniently become chronic the moment their salaries drop in half or more. They signed these contracts knowing the pay structure and security of getting a lot of money up front and when the back half of the deal comes around they decide it's not worth it to play out the deal. If you are a Red Wings fan how do you feel that your 2nd leading scorer from last season doesn't want to play because he's only making $3 million instead of $7 million? This is the NHL not the KHL and some fans expect better ethics from the supposed best hockey league on the planet.

I'm not going to take the low road and call you an embarrassment for not looking at the reality of what's going on here but I will say this is an embarrassment for the league.

You can't trade for a player that doesn't feel it's worth coming to North America and going through the rigors of an 82 game season for a reduced salary. What kind of doctor has the precognition to know that because Hossa's back hurts today he wouldn't be able to play in February? Would the Flames accept if Monahan's doctor said at the beginning of the season his back hurts and maybe he should take the season off? No they would want their doctors to monitor him and try to ensure he's back as soon as very possible. That's not happening here with the Wings because they know what's going on. Zetterberg should be treated like any other player that starts the season on IR in that they are in the city and dealing with team doctors while rehabbing. Does anyone think his back is going to get better after taking this season off and he's going to come back for $1 million the next season? Really?

Should it not be asked that he have surgery if his back is this bad? It's bad enough that he can't play ever again but not bad enough to have surgery?
