Wow, if you could switch Frolik's contract for Nylander's new contract I'd do that for Valimaki in a heart beat, and that's coming from a huge fan of Valimaki.

Seems to follow that path, yes.

Would you trade Karlsson straight up for RNH?
Because RNH has shown too be a better all around Center in his career than Draisaitl, and he's on a better contract.
Draisaitl hasn't proven to be an elite top line center, just because he's paid like one, doesn't make him one.
Away from McDavid, he's shown to be a average top 2 center, capable of 50ish points, while being half decent defensively. RNH has also shown to be a 50 point center while being far better in his 2 way game.
So ya, Edmonton has to sweeten the pot for Ottawa to take on 7 years of overpaid Draisaitl if they are giving up the far superior player, and sending out less money.
I can't think of too many teams that would give up an elite defenseman for an overpaid top 6C, without a serious add.

Ottawa has such a bad track record with trades... whenever they trade their players it seems they fall for getting guys who have already likely had their best career years and are very unlikely to match it or ever come close to it. Guys like Cheechoo, Bobby Ryan, Milan Michalek. They take these guys back in trades and they’re considered to have value at the time but within a year or two of having them... they are just an anchor contract. I see that same thing with players like Draisaitl and RNH... I think they’ve both seen their most productive seasons already by playing with McDavid and I don’t think they will ever come close to matching those with Ottawa. I also don’t see much value in Poolparty since he could be seen as more of a project at this point.
For this reason, if I was Ottawa, I’d be valuing picks and can’t-miss prospects (if there is such a thing) in this EK trade. Young, cost-controlled players who have a high upside. Someone mentioned Colorado trading their first round pick back to Ottawa + Makar... that seems like the right direction for Ottawa. Or getting Petterson + an unprotected 1st round pick from Vancouver. Obviously these kind of returns would require a signing from Karlsson with the new team. Some might call it magic beans but I wouldn’t fall for players like RNH/Draisaitl who take up value on the return but I believe will just be dead weight in a couple years.

Yeah, an Edmonton deal likely would have to include one of Draisaitl (unlikely IMO), Nurse, or RNH. Or they add sweeteners to include Lucic.
Salary has to go back the other way. So it probably has to look something like:
Draisaitl +, or
Nurse +++, or
RNH ++
Or, they convince Ottawa to take Lucic's contract, and offer something like:
Lucic + Puljujarji + Bouchard + (high) pick
Either way, I am all for it!

If I'm Ottawa I want blue chip prospects and picks. A guy like RNH is a UFA in 3 years. Seems pointless to trade for someone like that. You know you will suck during that time and then he can walk. Get assets you can control. Ottawa is in no rush. The best they could do is maximize their assets right now and hope that all these young kids are all coming up together in 2-3 years.

I think the Oilers would love to get out of that Draisaitl contract. He's way overpaid for a guy that can't really do it on his own line. Sure their fans love him, because they're fanboys, but you can't be paying a passenger Stamkos money.

Lifetime Suspension

If they could cash in right they could get multiple good pieces and could feasibly recover some of their forward depth/talent in a season or two and actually support mcdavid. But this is the oilers, and they'd instead do a 1 for 1 sans picks for a straight up worse player if they did deal him. They're not interested enough in futures, just patching immediate holes so they can sell a narrative of an impending championship for another few months until people realize they just got worse.
The top half of that roster can't take another gouging of talent or it's going to spur a long period of losing/recovery again. Chiarelli needs a few big wins to actually get that team on an upward trajectory like it actually may have been pre-trade of eberle and I dont think he has the chops to pull it off.
Which, of course, is great.

If I’m the Avs, there’s no way I offer Ottawa’s first back. I’d offer my own first rounder though. That should be in the 20’s with EK on the team.

That is an overpayment imo. 2 top 10 picks and another first for one year of Karlsson?

If teams are only getting one year of him, then i think this is too much. Ottawa would have traded him by now if they could get something in this area.

Toby Enstrom is returning to Sweden to play for Modo -- his hometown team. He garnered a fair amount of NHL interest this summer, but didn't find a situation that kept him in North America.

Erik Karlsson reached out to say: it is not accurate that he is unwilling to sign long-term with a Canadian team.

For $20 mil/year I'd probably sign in Edmonton too! Nothing less though.

I'm either hoping we get him and sign him to a sweetheart deal long term, or Edmonton dramatically overlays for him and he leaves after one season

It will be a monumental mistake (in my opinion) if they trade Cale Makar at all.

There is zero chance that Karlsson signs a long term sweetheart deal with any team.
His contract will eventually be an anchor for some team. That's the nature of a 7-8 year deal in a cap world when a player is in the 30 year old range.
What is one year worth of an elite player for the potential opportunity of signing a huge contract which will eventually stink?
IMO, it's not as much as most posters are saying.
If I'm Colorado, I'm not throwing the Sens pick into the mix.
