I just don't know what to say here....this guy from Verizon is a MORON. And I would have been yelling after about 5 minutes of this conversation.

Just saw that myself ... also found references on the Consumerist site about this happening to another guy!

Working in the IT field at my last company, and speaking from the tight restrictions I was under as a Summer Student there, I know first hand that this kind of thing would have been a MAJOR Sarbanes and Oxley (S-OX) violation, and likely would have resulted in some departments being let go, and some even tighter policies.

If the people at Verizon recongize that it's 0.002 cents, and not infact 0.002 dollars, but are still billing IN dollars - where is that other 70 some odd dollars going that are on the same bill? Auditors would be jumping down people throats left and right over this one. No mention if the algorithm in the system has been fixed, either.

Big time no-no in the NYSE world.

You know, the docs I work for use calculus almost everyday when they diagnose patients and treat them. I wonder why it wouldn't be a prereq...

If you liked this video, then you love this guy trying to cancel his AOL account. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmpDSBAh6RY

I would have been screaming this at this guy and slamming the phone into my desk followed by head.

My problem is the guy is actually pretty bad at explaining his problem and I wish he would just try to explain it like a real grade 2 math teacher.

Why doesn't he just say:
"Write down .002 cents, AND UNDERLINE THE WORD CENTS. Multiply that times the number of kilobytes. You get a number on your calculator, 71.79. THAT IS STILL IN CENTS. You start out with cents, you end up with cents!

If you take 1 APPLE and you multiply that by 5, you still get 5 APPLES".

The sigh he makes at 15:53 of the video is just priceless.

Theres a reason chemisty and physics teaches are usually anal about keeping units in calculations.

I thought in canada it doesn't matter if you major in history or what ever, you can still get into med school. You just have to pass the qualifying exam.

Some people suck at math. I can understand that, since I'm one of them. But the funny thing is the guy explains it to them 50 times and they still don't get it. There is being bad at math and then there is being just plain stupid. If someone explains something (simple) to you over and over and you still can't grasp it, it's not a math problem but a brain problem.

That is true, as long as you score high enough on the MCAT then you have a chance with any degree, actually you don't even have to finish your degree if you are smart enough.

I think part of it is also it is probably making sense to the CSR's in their brain, because they have been told and trained wrong.
There are points where they seem to grasp it, and then it just all goes out the window.
$0.02 is 2 cents.
$0.0002 is what they are charging
$0.000002 is what he was quoted.
Looks like someone changed the decimal places in an attempt to make it easier, and screwed everyone up. I think Micheal Bolton did it.

I think it becomes a "i can't be wrong" argument... they're clearly wrong, and know it.. but do menial things like say "so, you were in canada..." long pauses... they're thinking "how the hell am i going to not look stupid in this" when they just end up looking even dumber than before...

I would've poked my eyes out by the 10 minute mark.

"We are in Canada..."

(silence - computing)

(more silence)

"Hold one second for me...okay...Cana-da."

(even more silence aka computing...)

Arghh...

here's an example of what i mean..no specific pre reqs to get into med school at a decent med school in Illionois

http://www.siumed.edu/studentaffairs/requirements.html

compare that with the U of A/U of C..

Im not saying that the colleges are bad...it's just the system that is flawed........and not all uni's are like that...obviously the IVY"s and some of the other uni's have tougher requirements than Southern Illinois University, but hey, it's an accredited school where one can be a doctor! No one is REQUIRED to take math or anything like that (and so how can you expect a lady at verizon to know the difference??) when a med student doesnt have to take math to get into med school or for admission into the university's bachelor degree program???????????
OilersBaby, would you say that Pomona and Harvey Mudd produce incompetent graduates? There are definitely more than Ivy's and "some other colleges" that beat a school like U of Calgary in the quality of teaching (I am not qualified to make that assessment, just throwing my BS in there ).

Of course not, they are GREAT schools, esp for engineering. And I shouldnt generalize..here there is a wide range of levels of difficulty for admissions and also for staying in. There, its basically EXTREMELY STRICT/rigid all the way across the board. Thats all I meant to say - that here, you dont HAVE to do it one way or another..and you can still end up with an MD.

I hate people that can't understand simple math.

Especially when its spelled out for them, and ESPECIALLY when customer's money is involved.

How do these idiots even hold down a job?

Look at the comments from some of the posters below the video, some of them think the guy is WRONG and Verizon is Right!

I have just posted a couple things that someone in grade 3 should understand (my handle is Tubascope).

Innumeracy is still rampant
