Could be three and I am not saying the Flames should not be looking at ways to fill that gap, I am saying trading our 1st rnd pick away again for a position that has an overabundance of decent available players would be crazy.

I would agree. Although I would probably be okay with it if they were one of the top teams in the league come deadline and the 1st rounder is a guaranteed late pick.

Strange.... If TO is willing to trade Nylander it's because they can't afford to sign all thier forwards. I doubt he is traded for a defensemen that is currently getting paid close to what Nylander could expect.

It’s “couldn’t care less”.

Marner would be a much larger prize than Nylander - especially if it involved Gio. The next big trade will be for a No 1 goalie or shipping out Bennett or Jankowski for a larger piece.

Giordano to Nashville for Saros, Fabbro and Nashville’s 2019 1st.

To me, the lines then look something like this:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Neal
Bennett - Ryan - Frolik
Mangiapane - Jankowski - Czarnik
Dube - - Lazar
Hathaway - - Foo

Hanifin - Brodie
Valimaki - Hamonic
Kulak - Andersson
Kylington - Stone
- Fabbro

Smith
Saros
Rittich
Gillies
Parsons

The Flames would be very young on defence, but I believe Hanifin and Valimaki can hack it. These days young defencemen often make it work. Is it stupid to assume this means Hanifin and Valimaki can follow in their footsteps? Possibly. But the future looks very bright on the blue line.

In net, I like the situation much more.

Meanwhile, the Flames’ roster has a higher upside in my estimation, especially with 2 2019 1st rounders.

The Flames did not go out and make all of these roster improvements just to turn around and trade their captain and #1 defenceman for picks/prospects and an unproven goaltender (who admittedly could be amazing), Without Giordano that defence is absolutely awful looking in the short term.

You’re almost certainly right. I’m just looking for the right time to trade Giordano while his value remains high. He’ll be 35 this year and I think this trade could help set the team up for years to come.

Of course, there are also many risks as you note. Saros is unproven. Hanifin and Valimaki may play terribly, especially if Brodie needs Giordano. The 1st round pick might be a bust.

But I am always thinking about the return from Iginla.

Or Giordano could just retire in Calgary. You don't have to maximize trade value on every player, the only reason it was an issue with Iginla was because the team was trending towards rebuild anyways. Calgary is currently trending upwards so trading Giordano isn't something that needs to happen at all.

He has most of the tools. Except two:

1. Size: nothing can be done about this one but his style, mobility and aggressiveness can mitigate it. This is where the Quick comparisons come from.

2. Patience: going back to junior he over commits and does so early when the play begins to unfold. Parsons uses his athleticism as a default whereas elite small goalies pick their spots. This is, IMO, where Quick is elite. Quick is an extremely intelligent goalie and I’m uncertain if this is a skill that can be developed. If Parsons acclimated to the professional game in this way then yeah... he will be real good.

Yeah, there’s no need to trade him. It’s more that I think Calgary’s roster’s long-term upside is not high enough. It’s just my opinion, but when I compare Calgary’s young core to other young cores around the league, I don’t think the Flames are good enough going forward. It’s also my opinion that I don’t think the Flames are good enough to win the Stanley Cup in the next few years while Giordano is still a top-end defenceman. So I think they could consider trading Giordano to improve the young core and long-term upside.

My assumption is these are the players good enough to be considered part of the core going forward:
Gaudreau
Monahan
Tkachuk
Lindholm (this is borderline for me...I want to see more)
Hanifin
Valimaki

I think Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Hanifin and Valimaki will end up forming the inner circle, if you will.

At the end of the day, it really sucks Bennett isn’t trending towards becoming a great young centre (or even winger). I think if he had become that, things would feel different to me.

Giordano is the captain, the heart and soul of the team, and their best defenseman.

You trade him for the future and the team is right back into rebuild mode.

Also, for an example of a team without solid veteran leadership to keep things on track and to teach the kids how to be good pros, just look 280 kms northward. Removing Giordano from this team (especially for those assets) would decimate it. It would also decimate the defense.

I think our next big trade involves Hunter Shinkaruk being shipped out east for another 2013 draftee.
