Struck me funny, as it has Taratukhin's pick going out. Based on HockeyDB, it looks like there is another trade missing, as the pick went from Anaheim to Phoenix June 19, 2001 and then came back to Calgary from Phoenix on June 23, 2001, with the Kobasew pick, in exchange for the Sjostrom pick.

So I guess we dropped from 11th OA to 14th, in exchange for getting our 2nd back. Which makes sense, as Taratukhin was the 11th pick in the second round.

Hockey DB has Vail as being originally drafted by Atlanta.

This trade has always stood out to me and obviously winning the Cup that year negates anything but I always thought Vancouver fleeced us in this deal as Reinhart and Bozek were both solid players. I've always felt Reinhart is one of the most underappreciated Dmen of the 80s. Injuries will always give you a 'what-if' with him. Granted neither one of these guys were in the league beyond the 91-92 season but I still think CGY should have gotten more than just a 3rd Round pick back, no?

I believe it's simply a case of Atlanta reacquiring the Vail pick before it was made. The 1973 Draft was on May 15, so the second trade would have been a Draft Day deal.


In 1972, the first trade was: Powis and Comeau for Atlanta's 1973 Second Round Pick and $$$.

Then, on Draft Day 1973, the second trade was: Montreal's 1973 First Round Pick; California's 1973 First Round Pick; and Atlanta's 1973 Second Round Pick for Atlanta's 1973 & 1977 First Round Picks and Atlanta's 1978 Second Round Pick.



In the end...

The Flames got Powis, Comeau, and two First Round Picks (CAL & MTL) in 1973.

The Habs got CA$H, two First Round Picks (1973 & 1977) and a Second Round Pick (1978).

This trade still stands out as one of the those hard-to-believe ones. Was there a background story behind it?

This is obviously a very lopsided deal, even taking into consideration the fact that Savard’s career was cut short due to concussions.

Savard of course became one of the league’s most lethal playmakers almost immediately after the trade (if he wasn’t already considered that), and he truly exploded after the 2004-05 lockout, when he returned to the NHL after a season in Switzerland and put up consecutive seasons of 97, 96, 78, and 88 points, all with the Bruins. Zainullin never played a game in the NHL.

Eric Vail was drafted by the Flames in 1973 and won rookie of the year for them in 1974-75.
Perhaps it was their third round pick in 1973, as Ed Humphreys was taken by the Canadiens in the spot the Flames drafted according to the hockeydb.

The word I heard was Savard was shooting the puck at the coach in practice and refused to buy in. He had earned a reputation as a trouble-maker and no one was offering the Flames anything of value.

He also publicly requested a trade......twice.

He killed his own value to the Flames.

That was all known. I have never heard a real reason behind Savard wanting out so bad. Not even rumours. There has got to be something.
