Comstockery

It's not really funny, but kind of. One thing I read said that part of "Comstock Law" had it that a book by a man and a book by a woman couldn't be displayed next to each other on bookshelves in stores. It was too suggestive of a man lying next to a woman.

As for Wal-Mart et cetera, I don't like it much, but what are you gonna do? It's their store. If I ran a bookstore I can think of a few books I might not want to carry.

The US doesn't doesn't ban things as a nation, but many of it's biggest companies do and without much scrutiny.

In a country that is so proud of it's "freedom of speech" why is there no backlash against Walmart for acting like a censoring dictator?
Isn't it the companies freedom to ban those things though?

You certainly can't 'force' them to show something against their will.

Yeah, I guess. I probably wouldn't want to sell everything either.
Just was wondering how people feel about it. I'm not saying it's necessarily good or bad.

I remember when the Nirvana record "Heart Shaped Box" came out years ago. Wal-Mart refused to carry it due to some aspect of the packaging -- it had to do with baby dolls or something. Big whoop, you can buy a Nirvana record anywhere, right? True, but in some places Wal-Mart was the only place that sold records, so a few bumpkins couldn't get the record, so that was the complaint.

Nothing to really raise a stink over though. THey can stock whatever they want. It always seemed kind of silly to me that they sell semi-automatics, but a picture of a doll is offensive.

Like Rouge says, if you're the only place selling records, books, movies in a certain area..i.e. small towns such as Pincher Creek now getting Walmarts...it makes no sense to ban certain items.

That to me is a valid complaint...but one that wouldn't matter anyway. You can't force Walmart to carry certain stuff.

There is backlash against Wal-mart right now for treating their employees like shat.

No coincidence that they have posted their worst quarter in a decade.

There is always scrutiny if you're willing to look for it.
