I think the studio will end up caving and fork over the dough, at least they will with Pine. Hemsworth's character is easily replaceable. But to a younger generation, Chris Pine IS Captain Kirk. They need him.

What is funny to me about this- the idea of casting somebody else as Kirk other than Shatner was to show that Kirk's character was larger than Shatner. Now we are talking about not being able to replace him.
I do get Pine's position- the last movie brought in 1/3 of a billion dollars still. It wasn't like it lost money.

Star Trek Beyond opened to $59.2M, the lowest for the millennial reboot despite having similar reviews to Into Darkness (84% certified fresh). Star Trek Beyond ended its domestic run at $159M — far from enough for a film that cost a reported $185M before P&A and churned a $50.5M loss after all ancillaries counted per financial sources.
Maybe if they spent more time on a compelling story, and less time on wiz-bang CGI they could make a popular movie for less money? Crazy thought, I know.

I don't know man, I might be off, but its a hot and cold thing and you have to be really on the mark.
If you look at Star Trek Movies. Star Trek TMP to me had an outstanding story, it was unique and intriguing. They had solid special effects in it, lavish looks at the Enterprise, floating majestically through space. When it flew through V'ger's cloud it was stunning, but there wasn't much if any action. It was a pure character driven story, and its not looked upon as fondly. I don't think a movie like that would survive initial reviews.
Star Trek TWOK, probably to me the crown prince of Star Trek Movies. A great movie with strong performances by all of the actors, but it had a heavy action level to it, but what made it work was it was unique, the villain and the hero never met, the action was built entirely out of special effects.
I think that I do agree in principle to what your saying, but I firmly believe that the modern movie goer needs the action and special effects. The problem with the last two movies were that they premise and the stories weren't that good, the villains not that intriguing at all, and in the last movie they went way too far in the action and trying to be cool thing.
I also believe that the problem with franchise movies is that they graded on a curve versus the best of the franchise. For a while Marvel sequels were pretty harshly panned. But Civil War and Infinity War broke the curve.
In the Star Trek films, they're always going to be compared to TWOK, TSFW, TVH home trilogy where they just put out three outstanding story driven with action and effects movies and those movies just leave everything in the dust.
For the next Star Trek movie what they need
A new and unique story
A villain that's actually good
The right mix of effects and action without being the key focus in the movie

No. No. No.
Its a miracle that they let them make more movies after that gigantic turd of a film.
It was bad. It should feel bad. Anyone who enjoyed it should feel bad and anyone who paid for it should feel worse.
No. It was objectively terrible. If you found any positives in it then you had to have been digging pretty deep.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Boy, you're in a mood Locke, I like the actual story line, which I thought was science Fiction to a great level. They could have probably cut about an hour out of that film just by editing out half of the scenes where Kirk is staring at the view screen.
But when the biggest action scene was the enterprise torpedoing a rock you've got a problem.
Basically having a story where you take on a robot god with no arms and no legs things are going to get boring unless he's got an interocitor.

Whenever a wiz bang shaky cam action scene comes up in a movie these days, I don't enjoy them. I know what the outcome is, becuase the stories are dull and predictable, so I suffer through 5 minutes, not giving a crap about what is going on, waiting for them to get to the point.
A good example of this was near the end of the most recent one. Oo, look, they are tumbling through space, and I can't keep track of anything. Oh good, this goes on for 10 minutes. We know Kirk isn't going to die and it's near the end of the movie, so obviously the bad guy is going to get it. I don't need 10 minutes of back and forth to get to that.
I'm fine with special effects driving plot, but scenes like this don't drive it, they are a speed bump.

You're being too mean to TMP.
Directed by Robert Wise, who edited Citizen Kane. It doesn't really happen anymore where movies give entire 5+ minute scenes to showcase their music. Jerry Goldsmith is on the Mount Rushmore of film composers. And the visuals in this sequence are still absolutely gorgeous.
Get good and high this October and watch TMP. It doesn't belong with those other, ahem, efforts.
