Bluntly, if PS3 bombs out Sony will be in the same spot Nintendo has been in the past ten years.

How so? Nintendo has made profits on their gaming gear every year since they went in to business.

Fact is Compared to other consoles out Nintendo hasnt had a winning console in about 10 years so he's right. There after more than breaking even, expecially in Japan. The PS massacred anything Nintendo at the time and that at the time made them irrelevant, aside from nintendo groupies, no one cared. That was until a little thing called the DS arrived.

They may have profited but they've been third in the console war for a while. Even my buddy who is a Nintendo fan can admit it but I've seen alot of hardcore Nintendo fanboys who cant.

Went out to an EB store on the weekend with my youngest son and we tried out the Wii. The game was Excite Trucks and it was a riot. You have to give a piece of ID to get the remote and we very quickly had a gathering around us checking out the game. The funniest was two kids who were playing Xbox360 right beside us and quit to watch the Wii in action. Never had so much fun driving a vehicle and it's so easy to drift it in the corners. Could have stayed a whole lot longer than the 20 minutes we hogged it for but the wife and Christmas shopping interfered.

The whole 'console war' idea is a figment in every fanboy's imagination.
It's an overly simplistic bar to judge the game companies that is easy for media to write about and easy for video game nerds to compare to.
I'll tell you what video game companies care about more. Making money. And Nintendo has done that hand over fist better than either MS or Sony. Nintendo may not have sold as many units but they have made immensely more profit, which, in my opinion, is what determines who wins. Who has the most successful business. Were it not for MS's huge bank account xbox would have gone the way of 3DO, Dreamcast and Turbographix.
The fact is that Nintendo's earnings are up 83% this year and that Nintendo products have grown the entire NA game industry by 85%. How Nintendo is 'losing' the war is beyond me. They are the healthiest of the three companies and have never lost one dollar with any of their system sales.

Sure they care about money but even though they might not admit it they care about being number one. I really could care less anyways. Even though I own a 360 I'm nowhere near a fanboy. I got it because Nintendo's game selection just doesnt do it for me and the PS3 is way too expensive right now.

Lucky you, I wanted to just try the Wii on a demo kiosk, but can't even find one here in Saskatoon.

All companys need to make money... Sony and Microsoft have huge other devisions to make most of their money, so they take huge losses in gaming, to get more consoles out there, and then the consoles push things like BlueRay, and HD-DVD... at the benifit of the other departments within the company.
Nintendo doesn't do that because they only have 1 major focus, making games. So for their business to be profitable they dont take a loss. That being said it would almost be impossible for them to take a loss on the Wii considering they still made money on the gamecube at $99. Not much has changed since then, i would guess that had they included HD support that may have put them into the negatives per unit.
If you think that there isnt a console war, and that neither Ms or Sony effect Nintendo then your just plain crazy, just listen to there Ceo talk, he wont go long before mentioning his competitors.

Nuber one in what though? Sales? I believe the old nintendos are still outselling the Xbox and PS3 in Japan so they are #1.

With the interest that Wii has generated, this is really Nintendo's chance to re-assert themselves as a leader in gaming. I really hope the Wii is as good as the NES was...but that means a strong variety of games, not just focusing on mushrooms, monkeys, and frogs, or tadpoles, or whatever most Nintendo's characters are. Sure, make those games, but also make some games that those who want a little more action would appreciate. They say it is a console for everyone, well then truly make it a console for everyone. And also make sure you make a lot of innovation in sports games, like NHL 2008, etc.

Well currently the XBOX360 is #1 since they've had a year head start and there really isn't any chance of Nintendo or Sony catching up to them right now seeing as they can't even produce as many as MS has sold within the month that they've been available. But as for the world between Nintendo and Sony, definately right now the Wii is doing better then the PS3, why? Because Nintendo already launched the Wii into Asia, North America, and Europe whereas the PS3 has only been launched in North America and Japan.
And Nintendo is definate #1 in the handheld market already. Good luck trying to find a DS Lite in Japan.

That's very true. You cant really say who's winning the current console war for another couple years or so. But as far as the past Nintendo's been behind Sony and Microsoft.

I'm not a "gamer" and the only game I play is Tetris on my cell phone, but didn't Nintendo lose money on their Virtual Boy? That system only had a couple dozen games (I think)

My brother phoned this weekend. He works for a major software developer,
and they received a Sony Playstation 3 and a Nintendo Wii for a couple
of days on demo.
He asked how I liked the Wii, and I told him it was fun.
He said yeah, pretty much 100% agreement across-the-board at his workplace, the Wii is a lot of fun.
They opened the PS3 first and ooohed and aaahed at it. Plugged it
in got it working. They began to play, and ooohed and aaahed.
Someone opened the Wii and set it up, because the crowd around
the PS3 was huge, and the wait time was long.
After about 30 minutes no one was playing the PS3 anymore, and
everyone was laughing along on the Wii having fun. The PS3 collected
dust from that point on, until return time.
