Does anyone have any experience with this monitor and can tell me if it's any good? I'm gonna be building a computer for my niece for Christmas using all my old parts and I still need a monitor, speakers, and a case.

I was going to get another CRT but my friend told me LCDs are starting to get to the level that CRTs are for gaming and color so I'm considering getting one since LCDs are lighter and are suppose to be easier on the eyes and power. I saw this monitor for $479 at Futureshop so I'm considering getting it. I do alot of gaming and do graphic work so I need a monitor that's good for both.

Thanks in advance

I hear entry level LCD's aren't good for graphic work because of the difference in viewing angle between each side of the screen, resulting in a variation of contrast/color in the artwork. I still think your best bet is to get another CRT for gaming/graphics and wait a few years until LCD's are better and cheaper. Afterall, you can buy a very nice 19" CRT for the cost of a 17" LCD.

Cool, thanks for the link. The prices look cheaper and the shipping doesnt look too bad either. I just need to make a decision on whether to go LCD or CRT.

The new goggles also do nothing.

Everyone is different when it comes to LCDs so it's hard to go by a recommendation.

The 712N has great specs for an LCD, 12ms response and 600:1 contrast. It's analog (no DVI), but at 1280x1024 (its native resolution) it shouldn't be a huge factor.

I've played BF1942 on a 712N and it's pretty good, but I wouldn't buy one for myself for full time gaming. I actually purchased what was then seen as one of the best if not the best 21" gaming LCD and I returned it in a week because it wasn't good enough for me; I could still see the ghosting and it bothered me enough that I couldn't get comfortable playing games.

My biggest suggestion is to find somewhere that you can purchase the LCD and then return it if you aren't satisfied.

But for gaming and graphics work a CRT is still king IMO. And if your graphics work requires accurate colour reproduction, be very careful since most LCD's aren't that good in that area.

I have a Samsung Syncmaster 172n and I'm lookin' at it right now.

I like it a lot but I don't know much about 'puters. You can turn it practically sideways and not lose any quality. Seems fine to me.

If youre getting and LCD the brands I recommend are NEC, Apple, Samsung and Sony.....Samsungs make pretty good monitors, so you have one of the better brands out there.

I think I'm going to go with the 710T. The offers pretty much the same thing that the 712N does and has both Analog and DVI support. I've emailed Memory Express to see if they accept returns in case I dont like it and want to go back to CRT.

Hilarious!! I was going to post the same thing.

Had this screen for a year or so, and it seems pretty sweet to me. Like Cow, I'm no computer geek, but it sure does the job for me. Quite clear.
