I am trying to wrap my head around the historical sentiment on this board (i.e “fire him into the sun”) for Brouwer versus the headline.
In some ways Troy will likely end up mak8ng even more money over the next two years as the flames will pay him and i am thinking he will likely find work somewhere in the league for a couple of more years.

What is the delta for a break even contract for Brouwer to sign?

He lost $3 million of the $9 million still to be paid out on the contract.
So if he somehow makes $3 million over the next 2 years it will be no net loss for him (NPV and tax issues aside)

Looks like the Sun is sticking to its guns. Here is today's letters to the editor:

COLD HEADLINE?
Regarding your headline of Aug. 8. What a lousy, sensationalist piece of trash that is. Have some respect. Sure, as a hockey player Troy Brouwer didn’t work out here, but by all accounts he’s a fine gentleman and conducted himself with nothing but class as a Calgary Flame. Something your headline writer lacks, you should be ashamed. Garbage.
JOHN GILCHRIST
(The headline reflects the dismissive nature of the buyout. It was not personal.)

It will be tough. I could see him getting a one year deal. But probably not for $1.5. His best shot is to get a $1m contract and turn it into a $2m extension.

And social media.
I'm older and probably more sensitive but even someone that retweets say a Codi Ceci arb results with "... and is no good at hockey" makes me wrangle.
I'm not going to chase those people around, everyone has a right to do what they want, but just seems classless. These are real people.

didn't expect the Sun story to have so much legs... nor comparisons to posters on message boards.
The biggest difference is a pretty simple one: complaining on a message board is simply people joking around or venting.
the Sun's headline was in bad taste because the man just lost his job... I haven't gone back to read earlier posts, but i would say the say thing to posters who say things like "good riddance, he was garbage" after the buyout that i wouldn't have in a game thread.
Actual consequences (the man has a family and kids) should change the lens of how people categorize those types of comments or throw them around after the fact imo.

Disgraceful headline - form filled in and emails sent. Sure his on ice performance didn't live up to his contract but he is a good person and the Sun crossed the line.
Brouwer was my kids favourite player. During the warm up of one of Brouwer's first games, he looked directly at my kid, smiled and threw him a puck. He has interacted with him at different events, signed a bunch of items for him and always smiled and waved at him during warm-ups. My kid was one of the few people wearing a Brouwer jersey in the Saddledome and several times defended him when other fans questioned his choice! Troy was his hero and idol.
Although disappointed to see Troy as a person go, the buy-out makes sense and is a good lesson about the business side of hockey for my 11 year old. When I asked him who was going to be his next favourite player he asked, "Who else isn't very popular, I want to wear a jersey that nobody else wears" - does anybody have any suggestions for him?!?

I'm guessing Kulak will be gone pretty soon? That could be a good one.

Especially after a really bad season, I could see him having to settle for some PTOs during camp.

Is your kid me? That was my exact thought process when I got my David Jones jersey.
Also, get a Ryan jersey.

I love unsung guys. I was a Lambert guy for the Habs before Calgary had a team. I loved guys like Hrdina, Titov, Musil, etc.

But sure, let's all get worked up over a Troy brouwer headline.

But the fact of the matter is, though a little overdramatic, the Sun pretty much fills the role he described. Post media actually regularly cross posts US conservative voices going after African Americans and Muslims.
