Well... I haven't been to uofc res, but i did go to medicine hat...
My roommate had a crack-induced hammer fight with his drug dealer and some other friends and I woke up to cops, paramedics, firefighters, and blood everywhere (somehow my pots and pans got covered)...
I had a rough experience with res.. i met a couple good people, but other than that... i was really unlucky and it sucked living there...

i've heard that u of c rez is kinda hit or miss. i had a buddy that stayed there in a 2 person suite and he had a great time. he's still friends with his room mate and that was a few years ago. plus you have the perk of the very short stumble home from the Den (as oppose to the costly taxi ride home)

I think you were just unlucky. I know alot of people in U of C rez that love it. Plus I have a few friends all over the country in rez that also love it. I plan on trying it out next year to meet some more people.
If you live in Calgary and money is an issue it would be cheaper to stay at home. However if you are far away from home rez is probably the cheapest way to go...

I am at U of C, and I am in my 4th year.
I live at home with parents.
Why would you waste money to live AT school? Don't you ever have those days where you have to get away from school? Can't really do that if you live there.

Holy crap, of corse you should try for u of c rez!!!!
6R baby!!!
Seriously, the most fun years of my life were spent in Rundle, Castle and Olympus.... ah good times, good times. Chances are if you went to the university between 2001 and 2006, we partied together.
Rent is expensive, but for your first year that includes your meals, the fact that there are the tunnels which mean that you do not have to go outside for months if you don't want to, sleep until 5 minutes before class, stumble home drunk from the den...
I recommend rez to anyone! I think it made my university experience 100 times better!

I spent my first year in Trad. For the most part, I hated it. I'm not a huge partier and all the potheads and drunks on the floor kinda ****ed me off. Didn't help my grades at all either. But on the other hand I met a few people there who are some of my best friends now seven years later.

To me, I think this does a great job of explaining.
Yup, you could have a good or bad experience, but you could have a good or bad experience living at home or with roommates or wherever.
That said, I don't know...rez just seems like a rite of passage almost...you have to put up with the good and the bad, the fun and the not so fun, because that's just the way it is....

Living with your parents = boring
Of corse you have to get away from school, there isn't a leash keeping you there. But, you'll be living with 60 other people on your floor alone, let alone the rest of your building and the rest of the other rez buildings. You wanna go out on a Monday? There will be people going out... you want to stay home on a Friday to study, there will be people doing that. You will always have people to hang out with and there is never a shortage of things to do. I moved to Calgary not knowing anyone, within 3 days I knew 50 people.
The time you save commuting back and forth to school are worth it. Let alone once you move out of trad (kananaskis and rundle) you can make your own food in the kitchen, thus saving you money rather than buying at school. The first year of university is stressful enough, I think making it as less stressful as possible is a good way to start.

My mattress still had the "Made for the athletes in the Calgary Winter Olympics 1988" tag on it...

my parents gave me the choice of a car and living at home or rez.
Best choice I ever made was picking rez. The friends you'll make are amazing, and some of the best times you'll have are the nights when you aren't drinking copious amounts of alcohol. However, when you are drinking...those are pretty good times too.

I'm in my second year of rez (2nd year in trad), I'm on 4R this year, 7K last year.
I would definitely say go for rez if money isn't an issue, it'll be worth it. You meet a tonne of people and you'll have a blast.

I lived in UVic res. Like a lot of people have said, it was the best time of my life. Not so good for the marks though. The opportunity to live away from home, will help you mature a lot as a person though. Definately noticed this about 4 years out of university when comparing friends who had and hadn't moved away.
As I was saying not so good for marks, about 1/3 of my res floor flunked out w/in the first 2 years. Really depends on if your the kind of person who can handle living in a structure free environment.

Right now Im living on my own. have been for the last 2 years. Had a roommate for the 2 years before that. Both have been good & bad.
I've been thinking about moving into the rez next year aswell. since it would be a bit cheaper. does anyone know what the deal with parking is? I own a car would I be able to keep it while living @ rez? what about furniture? I have a nice fully furnished apt right now, would I be able to bring my stuff or would I have to keep it elsewhere?
Overall I just don't know If i really would want to give up my apt, since I like living DT and all, but being close to school and meeting more people would be cool.

There is two lots (49 and 50) that are exclusively for rez. But, one Summer, I managed to park on the streets and move my car around campus without paying anything... But either than that one Summer, I never had my car at school.
As for the furniture, there are apartments in rez, but they are very competitve to get into. You are based on how far away your permanent address is from Calgary (the further the more points), what year you are in and what your marks are like. For first timers, unless you know someone who has a crap-load of points and you will be roomates with them, you probably will get stuck in dorms (either sharing with someone, or a single room). Since you've been living on your own, a trasition to sharing a dorm will probably be very difficult... plus no room for furniture there... it's like sharing a bedroom with someone.
I lived downtown while going to school too, and I enjoyed it a lot. There does come a point where you out-grow rez, and moving into rez might feel like you're moving backwards... so I don't know if I would do that if I were you.

Never done res. Wish I had at some point.
From what I hear it's the experience of a lifetime. But it's also bad for the grades according to many of my friends.
