I'd throw Hamonic into the Alternate Captain mix as a dark horse.

I agree. I was impressed by his "give a crap" meter at the end of the year, especially after we were eliminated.

Right. Players are players, they're people. I think Brouwer was brought in to do a job and he just wasnt able to do it.
Its partly because I dont think Gulutzan used him very appropriately, but ultimately the contract was bad and Brouwer just couldnt perform.
Mistake made, mistake rectified. Now we can all move along and have a new whipping boy.

This move makes sense especially if Hanifin's contract factors into this decision. Also opens up a spot for someone to step up which is also exciting looking forward to training camp.

I have nothing but gut on this, but I think I would want to see Neal with an A. He's a solid vet who has been in all situations in the NHL.

Michael Stone, for the same reasons as Brouwer: overpaid and taking away ice time from our younger, better players.

But to a way lesser extent. Stone is overpaid like 1 million. Brouwer was overpaid like 3m5 million

I was more just pointing to the fact that if we graduate more young guys into the bottom six and especially fourth line (or energy line) then we avoid paying guys in the 1.5 - 2.5m range to play 10mins or less a game for us then we've already more than made up for that 1.5mil cap hit.
The idea being that contributions from younger cheaper players in the coming years could alone offset the brouwer cap hit.

Brouwer is not a great hockey player, but there was never anything controversial about his sporting a letter. I continue to be mystified about how worked up some fans get about a team's alternates.
|
Sorry, I prefer the leaders of the team to lead by example and not mail it in for half the season.

Good point...
This was my only concern with waiting till next year to buy him out.

No, it's just a way to show more guys that you consider them part of the leadership group, and you're only allowed to have 3 guys wearing a letter per game.
The reason you do a home/away split is to make it easier on your equipment crew because they don't need to check with the coaches every game to make sure the right players are wearing the jerseys with the letters. It also ensures that each guy will have the letter for an equal number of games.

Would like to see hamonic with an A. I prefer having a letter in each of your top 2 d pairings. that way you are most likely to have a letter on the ice ~45-47 minutes of the game just based on those two pairings. then you hope one of your better forwards can have one and be out there for some of that other time.
Personal preference but now that Brouwer doesn't have one, I don't really care.

That was my reasoning as well.
Peters will have his preferences too. Staal, Skinner and Faulk were his leadership group in Carolina. Two forwards and a defenceman.

There should be a framed picture of Troy Brouwer in the GM's office as a warning from history.

I know only the players with letters can go talk to the ref regarding penalties, etc. - but does that actually ever accomplish anything? I'm curious if it ever influences a ref's decision.

Again, I will reiterate my objection: why do any of us as fans care about which of the players serve as Alternates? We don't actually know why some are selected where others are not, and as far as I can tell this makes virtually no difference to a team's fortunes. I believe the Flames will be a better team with another player playing in Brouwer's spot in the lineup, but do I believe they will be better because he will no longer have an "A" stitched to his jersey? Certainly not.

I felt he would be bought out but I thought maybe in the last year of the deal as the owners are paying him almost $10 million not to play. Flames ownership takes a lot of flack here but I don't think anyone should question that they are not doing whatever it takes to ice a winner for the fans.
