btw - can any team claim him while he is on waivers?
I believe so, but why would they? They'd be on the hook for the entire contract which surely has negative value. I mean, if the Flames wanted to get rid of the contract without buying it out, they'd definitely have to package other assets with it.

I don't really understand the purpose of the home and away split. Is one guy supposed to be a better leader on the road?
No, but if you want to acknowledge more then 4 guys as being leaders home/road is an easy way to split it so that extra guys can get letters. I say put it on Backs fulltime... he's briefly gotten it in the past and he's gotten it in international play (so multiple people think he has leadership skills) he leads by example on the ice and he's involved in the community (I can't speak to "the room").
I don't like putting letters on guys who just walked in the door (Neal). Mickis is clearly the best choice IMO.

Fair on Brouwer and Bouma but Murphy was the plan all along.
Brouwer and Raymond have been the two contracts I hated the most under Treliving and it was instant hate. I kinda hated Engelland at first but he won me over, I knew nothing about him at the time so it was an uninformed hate.
The other two I knew would never work out unfortunately but no GM is perfect.
I would sign Hanifin to a long term deal only if it's in the 4.5-5.25M. I'm looking at Josi, Larsson and Klefbom as cap comparables, adjusted slightly for the cap increase. Anything more and I would just bridge him and use the cap savings for in season trades and for cap flexibility.
I actually think the chances of Hanifin becoming a 6+M player in 2 years is pretty low, and I would not be willing to lock him up for 6M or more long term.
The flames could sweep the scf and there will be a player that illicits about 20 posts of "fire this plug into the sun" every time they step on the ice. Believe that

Tre correcting mistakes. I’m glad he just wants the team to be better isn’t afraid to right some wrongs he made. I think this team could really do something, but I think it hinges on Peters, but he can’t be worse than gully so I’m hopeful.
