About time we buy him out. Brad seemed pissed off after the year we had and we all knew big changes were coming.
As for Brouwer, best of luck to him. IMO he goes back to the Blackhawks - 1 year/1 million.
I remember at an STH event last summer a fan asked about Brouwer and Treliving agreed that Brouwer had a disappointing year but seemed confident that he would have a bounce back season. I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume that Treliving felt pretty let down by Brouwer.
Agree. If Brouwer is the last bad contract the Flames sign then this will end up a very good decision. But look at dead money on caps around the league and I think you will see $1.5 million for 4 years is on the higher end for one player. This is going to reduce the team's ability to buy out other contracts or to take on contracts for next 4 years.
It's fine to say $1.5 million is not much money but look at how many teams spend within $1.5 million of the cap every year. And Flames have historically been very active on July 1 most years, which is when the bad contracts get handed out.
So while I understand the move, I'm not exactly dancing in the streets.
With the way the flames have loaded the roster with quality depth, I don't expect to see many in-season adjustments anyway. And with the majority of the core locked up for 5 years, not much on the expected to do list in the short term (Bennett and Tkachuk next year, half the defense in 2 years time). Besides, I think this move sends the right message from the front office: no free rides.
Well, too much dough tied into a player that never got to mesh with this team. Too bad as I liked Brouwer. but we're good on the RW side of things now. Younger and cheaper.
Like that he's not plugging up that hole anymore, but I'm not so convinced this was the right time to do it. I'd personally have waited one more year, but I understand why Brad's patience is wearing thin.
So, that frees up one more spot up front. Y'know, if I was Morgan Klimchuk, I'd be very happy today.

Very nice. He will most likely rebound somewhere on a budget contract with a depth role, just wasn't working here for the dollars.

Surprised the Flames bought him out now, as I figured they would do it the next off-season. This must mean that Hanifin will be signed for a longer term deal, which is a smart move. I won't lie - I was kind of interested to see how Brouwer would do under a different head coach, but this is the preferred move by far.
This means probably means that Lazar and Foo will probably both be regulars in the lineup, and that's a pretty good thing. Not only did the Flames lose their worst possession player, but they also lost their slowest player. I predict a much improved season for Lazar, and more points out of the 4th line in general.

Hard to believe Dustin Boyd partner in Moose Jaw is gone. It seems like forever ago Boyd was a Flame. It would have been nice to have had a few of Brouwers peak years, since Boyd never even blossomed.
