Honestly I don't get this concern. 1.5 mil is very minimal, especially if we stop overpaying fourth liners over the next 4 years.
And Cap likely goes up which just means we have a little bit less room to maneuver.

I still expect a few vets to be brought in to flesh out the exhibition games that will played here during those 4-5 days that the main squad is in China.
Personally I don't worry about any PTO latching on full time. Look at the cap. Not happening. But I figured that would the next panic point or thing to worry about as was asked about.

I think it's just based on how some of the borderline PTO signings over the past several years. People are worried that there always seems to be another Tanner Glass. But you're right, there doesn't seem to be much room on the roster this year for a borderline depth veteran, especially if a few of the prospects can finally step up and push for spots.

We already know who it's gonna be if it's another season where we're still talking about his potential.

There went my dreams of a reunited BBT line (Brouwer-Bennett-Tkachuk).
NOT.

It's a shame Brouwer didn't work out, but this really needed to happen.

The Flames now have $7,538,290 in cap space, and they are paying $2,404,167 to players who are bought out this season. The flames have 21 roster players, no including Hanifin.

If this facilitates a long term deal for Hanifin then it will be very much worth it. Treliving has been a man on a mission this off season.

Probably Treliving's biggest error. He's shown he isn't so stubborn though to refuse to buy "his guys" out and admit a mistake which you can't say for every GM.

Either of Grenade Puck Lazar or Invisible Hathaway seem appropriate.

Brouwer is bad. This will improve the team on the ice.

Agree. If Brouwer is the last bad contract the Flames sign then this will end up a very good decision. But look at dead money on caps around the league and I think you will see $1.5 million for 4 years is on the higher end for one player. This is going to reduce the team's ability to buy out other contracts or to take on contracts for next 4 years.
It's fine to say $1.5 million is not much money but look at how many teams spend within $1.5 million of the cap every year. And Flames have historically been very active on July 1 most years, which is when the bad contracts get handed out.
So while I understand the move, I'm not exactly dancing in the streets.
